Actually, I just got back and found a really good deal off hotwire - 41/2 star hotel in midtown for $150/night. Ended up being super nice and comfy.

St. Marks Hotel.... on the corner of St. Marks and 3rd Ave...
It's cheap, clean, and close to 6/N/R train @ Astor Place. Near NYU. It is what it is. St. Marks has alot of "night life" but I have lived in the neighborhood and it is safe. My wife's parents stay there when they visit...

zedvox, trek down to the lower east side and possibly to Williamsburg in Brooklyn, nice restaurants, etc. and if you like some different food you could try Madiba, a South African joint on DeKalb in Brooklyn: http://www.google.com/local?q=ma… I used to live in Astoria, Queens and Upper E Side on 2nd and 82nd.

get an apt. It's more fun than a hotel.

Stayed here twice, second time lucked out and ended up in a room the size of a suite with sofas, fridge and a desk, impresive building and friendly staff.
Theres a great events mailing list that somebody put me onto here on newstoday, don't have the name here.
Aha..found it...
