I know people that run stuff off premiere or even hook up a d.v. for live or pre-recorded live action. you can also be smart and have generative visuals using the music to create the visuals - midi and whatnot
You you can be even more of a smarty pants like a few chaps I know and create an interactive music/visual performance that relies on audienece input through their mobile phones. kind of sick but also v.interesting possibilities for the whole VJ thing.

using winamp type visualisations is kinda lazy - at least on its own. I been recently getting into the VJ gig. In my opinion:
Resolume
Motion Dive Tokyo
ArKaosPersonally i wouldn't use ArKaos, cos it has lotta cheap and cheesy effects. Many people consider Motion Dive Tokyo a bit of a toy, but i think it's AMAZING in creating on-the-fly visual effects (abstract colours shapes and shit). Resolume's really cool tho, cos with that u create funky-ass clips using After Effects or whatever, then go ape-shit on Resolume with em live. Ideally, if u're going the software VJ route, u'd want a 2 laptop set up with Motion Dive on one and Resolume on another.

oh and one more think, colombo stylee. People often say that the "tools" aren't important, it's what u do that counts - with VJing its most impotant. At the end of the day, ur setup solution shud be determined by the kind aVJing u wanna be doing. Creating clip orientated montages, surreal atmospherics, heavily beat-matched visuals, or just "back-ground" graphics. Different set-ups suited to different things.

winamp visualisations make me nauseous.

a friend of mine uses this, he's one of the better VJ's here so I guess this app should be ok..
