what's so "express' about it. Is it delivery?
- the_d0
make a white bground. tilt the 'e' in 'express' forward, then make it a faded but not too faded yellow. add in the rest -- 'xpress' -- in a half grey. Assuming they rent mostly DVDs now, maybe make the circle part of the 'p' contain a DVD. don't get cheesy though...
Bingo: e tilted for speed, DVD for rental.
this logo *hit is overrated...

thanks....
i get almost no brief and its cheezy ass work...
they want a duplicate of netflix....
but want their own logo...
go figure.

Net flix is just a logotype. I would do that and express teh express with color and shape
- dconstrukt0
EXPRESS the express?
LOL
that was good....
i'm just working on some stuff and i'll send him a shitload of shiity ass logos
then maybe they will tell me what type of thing they want from me.
- dconstrukt0
wow this is a challenge...
not too many samples to look for....
netflix is easy cause its 1 word...maybe 2.
this 3 word logo is crap.

express is a very nice word to play with, you dont have to emphasize the "video rental" have them be the secondary messaging underneath like a tag line....
maybe EXPRESS is in capitals:
EXPRESS
video rentalstype it our and notice how the letterforms take shape to each other, there is some rather nice negative space between the E and X - many fun things to do with X's! have fun
- dconstrukt0
thanks dude!
always good advice
i'm thinking maybe something with express in a handwritten font.....
dunno
honestly i'm kinda stumped....i can't visualize anything....
that seems to be the way i work best, when i can visualize exactly what i want and then i work on trying to make it....
sometimes making it is the other challenge.
and people just think we can whip stuff up off the tops of out heads....

start by telling them the truth, that the name they have chosen for their business is shit. 9 posts in the thread and i can't remember it except the express part. everyone knows netflix because it is easy and catchy. don't give them a logo, give them an identity. explain how their current name is hurting them. think netflix, blockbuster, give them a quick hit. if their online, no one is going to be able to remember the address. solve the main problem first, it's your duty as a designer.

ExpressVids

reelfast, fastforward, quickreel, vid i go, fastfilm... show them some other stuff. educate them so they will be a better client. explain how good design is good business. preach the word to them.

________________________As designers, we know better than they do because we know the industry. We're in the business of making businesses. I've done that to several clients where I could tell they picked the first name they thought of. I should them a list of their competitors names, identities, and showed them how their's compared. Most were quite greatful and took the advice. As for the others, i did not want their business because I could tell they did not value design as a strategic business tool. i recomended logomonster.com or logozine.com as being more in keeping with their business values.

as a designer you are supposed to solve a problem that a client has come to you with. personally sounds like you are in marketing, communications or strategic branding..... are you going to charge them for this research?
or just put in extra time, where they have already spent? buddy was asking for logo advice, not brand exploration
- johndiggity0
research is the first part of the design process. so yes, it is included in my fee. and no, i'm not in marketing or strategic branding, but as a designer solving problems is my business. with a name like this, or others i've seen, i could tell there was little or no research done by the client.
- magicpatch0
all good, but can you seriously say that there was no research by tyhe client? how many video stores in the world are there? i dont know facts, but i would imagine a lot.
finding a name would not be an easy process, so it Express Video Rentals Inc, or lmt or whatever they were happy with the name, then so be it...... as we are, they have a name already, and unless the are asking for further exploration, no need to go through so much red tape.
I would think the person behind the next Netflix or blockbuster, would not be asking for advice on NT, so i am guessing their initial budget was not too huge.may i see some of your work?
