maybe that's it. maybe that i'm just ackward that it's just about clients and that clumsy gymnastics and gettin' some pleasure by the end of the day.
but i still feel that it could be something else, and that all this web-community so-talk is all about selling t-shirts that carry a logo in a clumsy place.
now seriously. that sort of "nice job" talk is okay but is not to the point. the point is that design is more about tech stuff than real stuff and tech stuff is not real stuff. so i get this feeling of working in vain: something that is easily forgotten and comes to naught.
i think this is our challenge, making it happen otherwise. wisely. about stuff that matters.
oooooh, why was i born to be such a naive bastard!!

You're missing the whole picture. People don't want stuff that matters, they want spoon-fed stuff easily forgattable and recyclable. Designers are not like artists, they work for people and what people demand is void ;) You can always express yourself as an artist to "clean up" your designer "dirt"... But then again, anything is art nowadays. So you better not think about it too much or you'll end up like Van Gogh ;D

design is how one delivers the content.
design can be content itself.
designers are contented with paychecks.
de sign is what you de way with.
you can quote me on this. ~: )

I wouldn't get discouraged Winter. All change comes from within. You can affect change within a community. We live in a world where we have to design mundane things, and I think as designers, only we understand their frivolous nature. The client never likes what we like and so forth. We are different than everyone else. But we all ahve to pay the bills. But that doesn't mean you couldn't contact a good cause and offer your services, or help teach a kid interested in design, or volunteer, or whatever to affect some sort of change. It doesn't really matter the scal on which you cause a change, it's the fact that it happened, and it can cause a reaction larger than you imagine.

But design can be art, don't you see? Art is not just the expression of the individual that's much too simplistic. If I go and write a musicval and then perform in it with dozens of others this is still art, just as in if that same musical was derived of completely impromptu lines. It would still be art.
with Design you have the same thing, the question is. is it meaningful? what impact does it have on the viewer? with my design there's no mistaking the bulk of the message, because I design most of my projects for a faith-based organization, whom lets me express myself as well through it, and thats just it. its the idea for every design that comes from within and truly "expresses oneself"

Design is process. exploring ideas, cultires and people that surround us. we must absorb and observe and comment on it.
good? bad? funny? serious? that depends on the situation.
i do agree we do kinda live in a oooh that looks pretty or cool so lets go with the flow.
design is about engaging.
it does not need to be "-design -shall-save theworld" all the time.
it can be fun.

Design is Everything.

i disgree i do not tink art is any different than design or vice versa.
both are outputted in the world for peopel to interact with.
both are equal.
thank you

i absolutely agree zedvox

Ortega Y Gasset was the most clever philos. of modern thought. he predicted this dumb TV culture where nothing really happens. he predicted that in about 15 years we woudl be talking about movie plotd like something written on a religious principle. he predicted that modern man would (by way of providing a medium culture to everyone) became mediocre itself.
this lack of reflection on our own actions is the thing that worries me. it's not about pixels. it's about the effect.
but maybe i'm just on a bad day. maybe i'm surfing too much to see snowboarding promoted as the new-u.
i'm tired of this get-used-to-the-way-it-works-and... IT IS WRONG.
be honest about it not to the point of just admitting it but to the point of getting some earnest progress out of this hard-work (not of this hardware).

The music example you used made of impromptu lines is more along the Dadaist theory of art as a question. Is it art? Maybe. Is it good art? Absolutely not. The greatest works of art were so great because they broke new boundaries and asked questions.
Design is not about asking questions, it's the answer to questions.

Let's start a designer's country.

I'm with diggity
ou own country could be a very grand and beautiful thing

some proof that controlling your message works

design is all about projecting.
so when your thinking on putting in practice a project you already designed it.
- zedvox0
are you crazy?? a country full of desingers wearing black all the time and talking like
"my sex life sucks.it is a design problem.must solve it."
- johndiggity0
Secede! Rise Up! Think about it. All comercials would be funny, all road signs would be legible and make sense. Disabled people would be able to lead as close to normal lives as possible. Good looking, well built automobiles. Of course Helvetica would be the State Typeface...

?

I guess you're all talking about "webdesign" and "graphic design"
*leaves thread
- johndiggity0
I'm joking about the State thing obviously. it always makes me think of Nazi Germany. I think Hitler tried to design his version of the perfect society, controlling every aspect of life, architecture, art, music, what the people looked like etc... I guess design is about control on some level.

hhuhhuh. design is about design! that's precisely my point. it is not some pratical way of life.
i've been observing the way people are bound to this graphic world and i gather that there is some psychological transfer here.
LIFE IS ELSEWHERE.
design is just a synthetic way of making nice drawings and i'm just bothered the way people keep posting their problems as if design and life just got tangled by some whimsical godess.
and bothered the way design is full of fast comments about life and lifestyle (like epigrams) as if there is going to be some solution. there isn't really...
so... the point is why is this PVN looking like ICQ most of the time. why is design getting more and more related to the way-of-life rather by an exploration of the work itself?
i think these are essential questions to what we are all doing. eseential question to the work we should do in my op.
as NTB uses to say: "as you were."
