what is bank holiday??? sorry im an american so it if ive never heard of it then it doesnt exsit.... i love my big car and oil.

National Holiday, so the banks can realign their computer systems and catch up with the trading floors around the Globe. Because of the time differences, 3 or 4 times a year, depending on if it is a leap year, this has to be done, so all currencies and trading doesn't fly out of sink. If this didn't happen England would always be trading ahead of everyone else, and they could second guess the best shares to buy!
Crazy, but at leasts its a day off!
- strabley0
so everyone just takes the day off?
- Ohood0
Mostly, big stores don't, they cash in on the people who have days off.
- BeachBoy0
And the unlucky bank workers!
The big stores can open as they can hold their cash until the following day, when normal trading continues!

can be a pain in the arse if you're a freelancer
- strabley0
wow you brits really know how to party, anyone wanna knock off a couple stores at closing time? split the cash right down the middle.
- BeachBoy0
Ah, Strabley - you're not the first ot think of this, back in the seventies when "Bank Holidays" first started (Previously, the majoriy of the trading was done via wires) there was a n increase in big store crime, and the major outlets got hit. Nowadays they hire extra security guys to protect themselves! Nervous time for them

the sainsburys in Camden got done over a couple of months ago, tehy have these new checkouts where you swipe your own goods and pay to a machine (in camden, asking for honesty is asking for trouble!)
Anyway, apparently they hadn't emptied the machines for a couple of days and the robbers smashed through the door and cracked open the machines, got away with £38,000.. apparently they were having tinned food fights with the late night shelfstackers!
