Guys,
I'm really doubting 1and1. From all the recent posts about people going to them, I thought I might as well give them a try.For the past 3 days I have been trying to get someone on the phone to speak to about their service and to signup because the form online to signup is giving me problems. Well no one ever answers their phone it stays in constant on hold.
Overall, be cautious. I think im going to a host elsewhere. They just lost a possible customer.

1&1 is also a big hoster in germany, but I try to avoid masshosting companies for both my customers and my own pages.
thankfully I found a small hosting company where I might not get the cheapest price - but full service. the phone is answered, and it's not a 0900-service-line...
I spent three months worth of 'our' hosting on the phone with some 'techies', just to get a simple FormMail (provided by them!) running on a clients 1&1 account. duh, as they say...

Yeah, something is very fishy about 1and1.

1and1 does not equal 2, it equals 11.

works fine for me, and I had to call twice...got right through.

I would have to say that for the Western world (USA & CANADA) the best ppossible host you can align with would have to be Hostway. Oustide of being the largest hosting firm in North America they are continually buying up the competition and offering better service at reduced prices. I have had very few problems with Hostway (notice i did not lie and say none at all) but all of them were dealt with quickly and promptly via the 24/7 support numbers.
I have noticed that the new "cool" thing to do is to tag your site with a "hosted by" icon for places such as 2A.net or MT. I realyl don;t get it unless they are getting free service as the deicated server fees are recockulous and they do not even offer much in the way of server details. Maybe I am missing something here, who knows.

sadisticjay: see media temple thread for explanation on the MT logo on sites.

Ahh yes... sponsors.
Still - dedicated prices are WAY to much compared to what the competition offers. I just feel more comfortable with the larger companies.

I had a terrible time with 1&1 customer service, took 25 phone calls and 3 faxes to cancel a contract.
And they make no mention when you signup in UK that the server is in Germany. Not a big deal in actual use, but it's still weird.

I´m about to sign up with one and one.
Then I checked out Hostway. Alright, why the f*** do i have to chose what server platform i want. Whats the difference?
- ribit0
You mean Linux or Windows?
they work differently. I prefer Linux because of the compatibility of scripts n comands n stuff with our other servers (and OSX), and more open-standards, but your mileage may vary... depends what else you use, and what functions you need...
- ribit0
they explain pros and cons in their FAQ too..

You guys are dumb.

its free, or was, who cares. if they screw up go somewhere else. i havent had any problems yet. and the 2 phone calls i made, and 2 emails i sent were answered very quickly. i like em so far
- derrickito0
i guess you get what you pay for. oh wait. you didnt.
- l_articia0
they had a free deal that i signed up for... should i be worried?

Guys, keep this thread going. As I think hosting is quite important to us designers.
What do you (should I) look for when selecting a host? Is the features more important then the "service" and how much does the price matter?
- ILuvSushi0
I think service is a must Majk. If you cant get through to them to speak to them on the phone when your thinking about hosting with them don't use them.
Second is features. Any host can hype up features it's called sales/marketing.

so what sthe verdict on these cats a few months later?
- puter0
I use them- for free and a paid service- never had a problem- called them 6 times so for- average wait for me- 5 minutes.
Maybe they just like me.
For what they offer at the prices they do I am completely satisfied. I also have a MT plan- but pay twice as much for half the options. At least I got the cool "I am down" logo with MT right?

Dedicated server with root access and you're set. With shared hosting you will always have problems, no matter where you go.
