@ auto-
usually a bag sample cost more than the retail. since its 1 sample. however when the bag goes into production and thousands of bags are made the cost drops dramatically.here is an example.. when i design a bag for a specific store, i have the retail price as a starting point, so if the bag sells for $69.99 that means i have to design the bag at no more than $6-$8 total.
this price includes the paper pattern, the sewing, the cutting and the hardware/ logos. hardware is where the money is used most.
example- metal zipper pullers can be .35¢ each and on average for a bag that is $69.99 there is the main compartment, the computer section, the organization section and possibly 1-2 other zipper openings. if the zipper is more than 8" in length there is 2 pullers.
so the zippers alone cost the price - $3.50 on average of the $6-$8 price. now lets throw in some rubberized logos and screenprints, which can cost .45¢ each for lets say eyeglass section, media pocket, branding.. and lets throw in some grommets and daisy chains.. again .45¢ each.. and the price keeps going up..
but now for a single bag to be made, it really depends on the kind of construction, material and usage you want.
for a single bag it can be from any range, as it depends on the maker and their price. in china, sometimes you can get samples developed for free, with an order for production or if you have a nice relationship with the factory..
there is a lot of variables involved, plus you then have FOB cost [freight on board] for shipping and the price goes up even higher.. to lets say from the $6-$8 cost to FOB cost of $15-$22..
the $22 is the final price before it goes to retail and the mark-up is usually 350% up.. to get to the selling price.. from the original factory cost..
- damn, so the guy who can find cheaper zipper pulls and grommets wins!monospaced
- not exactly..the real points are when it goes from FOB to retail with the markup and profits.e-pill
- cool, thanks for that.. just curiousautoflavour

we work next door to a yoga studio. there's also a lot of construction currently, as two of the buildings on either side of us are being remodeled. every day at 10 and 1:30 all construction stops and the construction workers set up the gauntlet.

3 days of verminex from the vet, little pups poop is still full of live little white flat worms crawling in and away from its poop, so damn nasty. I must have bleached my back patio like 30 times in the last 3 days. looks like another trip to the vet in a bit.

the company decided to move me to a new hotel. i had an issue with the current one. this past saturday i dropped off my laundry to be washed, and the next day the clothes came back, still wet and smelling like dirty water. water that smelled like rotten fish.
i spent the entire night hand washing it all only to barely get out the stench, even used a full bottle of cologne to try to get rid of the smell. if i knew this is how they would treat the wash i would hand washed it myself originally.
so the next morning i complained to the hotel and told them i was very annoyed that my clothes came back smelling rotten. even let them smell it to prove it.
so now my company heard of it and are moving me to the hotel that the owners stay at. apparently they get some special rate, which is nice, it is considered the best business hotel in the whole provence.
and they have an excellent laundry service. also in this hotel my credit cards will work, as in the majority of china small cities like the one i am in, international credit cards are not accepted.
so i am excited to live more comfortably for the next 2 months as my trip has only been 2 1/2 weeks. also this new hotel has 2 restaurants while the current one has none. also they speak english, as the current only has 1 staff member that does but he only works daytime when im never there.

@epill
So you are really liking China, from what I see...
Question for you mate, do you see any progress in design for their internal market? A few years ago only the exporting industries looked half reasonable.- hmm tough question, since i am almost 24/7 in the factories solely working on my develops..e-pill
- i think asking mydo or jevad or ephix that you will get a better answer.. but..e-pill
- i will say that technology has come a long way from everything being made by hande-pill
- or cut and sew by hand.. now they have nice cad machines all doing it 3D printers and moree-pill
- getting developments completed today takes less than half the time it used to.e-pill
- not really sure how to answer the internal part as i am an outsider..e-pill
- the city i am in is rather small so i still feel like im back in china from last decade..e-pill
- in the big cities like hong kong, taipei, shanghai, beijing im sure the progress in design is high!!e-pill
- while the other large cities like shenzhen, dong guan, fuzhou are mainly factory cities..e-pill
- design yes, but a different aspect of it.. since its just factories.. of all kinds..e-pill
- from what i know. they are still very keen on copying everything. or just design them cute and childish. that's a sure sell. or have a pop star's face on it.pango
- ... sell. or have a pop star's face on it. it is getting better though. but the general public (china) just don't buy what we called design in western society.pango
- ...design in western society. Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia on the other hand is really booming (IMO). Taiwan has semi good design scene but highly influenced by japanese style.pango
- oh i went a bit side tracked...
depends on the city your at. ShangHai and HongKong definitely has a pretty good design scene.pango - just realized sentence got cut off... taiwan has semi good design scene but highly influenced by japanese style.pango
- its the same in any big city asia or elsewhere, individual identity shines with design n creativitye-pill
- however in the smaller cities struggling to have any identity there is lacking lots of design.e-pill
- the factory that does our production knocked us off directly. they use our designs..e-pill
- our logo, our hardware, our materials and even our hangtags.. their name is ..e-pill
- SWISSWIN.. while we are SWISSGEAR. they sell in china only and the parent company-e-pill
- Wenger cant do a thing about it..because this is china and design is out the door.e-pill

shaved my head.. feels soooo good to be back!!!

So I entered a bag design into a Eastpak competition ..
would be super if you liked it if you voted..- e-pill.. thus my questions the other day.. it was very much inspired by the transformerautoflavour
- well, the way the transformer can be super low profile while still carrying a laptop..autoflavour
- there are more images on the siteautoflavour
- ahhh another transformer bag.. memories!! haha cool!! best of luck!!e-pill
- did you already make this or is this a frankenstein of many bags pshoped into one bag?e-pill
- photoshop monster from about 6 bags, all sliced and massaged.. I wish i had the skills to build itautoflavour
- if you have time goto the apple store and check out thule's transformer bag.e-pill
- clone tool was used a lotautoflavour
- the bag looks soft construction yet, the items going inside are all electronic and need rigiditye-pill
- perhaps add some volume to the bag as its gusset looks very thin also add some detail itemse-pill
- Thule bag also your design?autoflavour
- perhaps that lower zipper on the front panel, make it a heat fused water proof zipper in REDe-pill
- or make the zipper puller bungee in a pop colour. also perhaps strengthen the handlee-pill
- a webbing top handle to carry electronic items is uncomfortable. make it strongere-pill
- yeah, the point was to reduce the padding a lot.. i carry my DSLR in the bladder section of the transformer a lotautoflavour
- and its survived pretty well over the past few yearsautoflavour
- thule is case logic..e-pill
- or case logic is thule how ever you want to look at it.. i designed for them 2 years agoe-pill
- fortunately the comp is basically pitching an idea, then if you make the final 6, they workshop and prototype it with youautoflavour
- you mention "transformer" which bag is that?e-pill
- thats RAD i wish you luck!! i can comment for days on this.. depends how much you want..e-pill
- to hear..e-pill
- is the insert inside the bag or does it clip to the outside?e-pill
- i see 4 compression straps, 2 on each side, is this where the insert connects to or elsewheree-pill
- when using compression straps, usually its for a very large size gusset.. not a thin 1e-pill
- have you thought of the size of the bag? height, width, depth?e-pill
- i would add a sternum straap on the shoulder straps, as the weight may become too heavye-pill
- do you like KATA camera bags?e-pill
- the inserts are for the main compartment.. its all inside..autoflavour
- transformer, i mean the Camelbak transformer .. it was you I had that conversation with right?autoflavour
- dont know KATA.. checking nowautoflavour
- kata bags-
http://www.kata-bags…e-pill - there is a more detailed description on the link.. dimensions, volume etc..autoflavour
- i suggest to use nylon versus polyester.. as its nicer and has more value than poly.e-pill
- do your zipper only stop 1/4 from top or do they open more toward where the side compression straps are?e-pill
- also you are using a lot of buckles.. the price for this bag will be very high.e-pill
- if you make it to the final 6, would you be able to further advance the design of it?e-pill
- or is it as is? only?e-pill
- i ask about the zippers only due to the buckles inside, to where the inserts clip on..e-pill
- it might be difficult for the user to attach them if the zip opening is too small to get ine-pill
- you may want to add some seams on the front panel or some pleats to add volume.e-pill
- basically you pitch an idea, then they fly you there to workshop and prototype the ideasautoflavour
- they are then voted on and the winner is put into production in the following year by eastpakautoflavour
- plus you get a 5000euro prizeautoflavour
- you can add more volume as you have 4 compression straps, the volume can be eaten by-e-pill
- compressing the straps and thus adding more functionality..e-pill
- definitely can adjust things, but only after you make it into the first round 6.. the entry is as isautoflavour
- i really wanted to have something with a low volume, if only to make people think about what they needautoflavour
- i love the way i can only carry a certain amount with the transformer backpack.. it stops me having a bag full of crapautoflavour
- but yep, all these suggestions are going into a word doc.. and i will definitely hit you up if i make it past this stage..autoflavour
- as for zipper length, would need to be long enough to reach inside and get lens, but not long enough to flop openautoflavour
- there is a lot i dont know about bag design (given this is my first) but i look at all the bags i have andautoflavour
- think of what i like and what i would change.. then tried to build a bag around that.. without making this http://onscreencars.…autoflavour
- http://onscreencars.…autoflavour
- you should take a look at Marmot's outdoor backpacks.. especially their shoulder strapse-pill
- they are very lightweight and very comfortable - http://marmot.com/pr…e-pill
- also look at their buckles,,they are more design forward than the standard black you usee-pill
- think shape and functionality.. look at other products in the backpack category and use ite-pill
- think material, think shape, think overall design and push it!!e-pill
- again best of luck!!e-pill
- here is Marmot's backpacks.
http://marmot.com/ca…
get further inspired!!e-pill - yeah the marmot bags are super comfy.. i get a sneaking suspicion that any final design will likely be adapted by eastpak to their ready made parts..autoflavour
- eastpak to include their ready made parts.. but have to see.. anyway, thanks for all your thoughtsautoflavour
- understood about ready made parts but nothing wrong with pushing the limits of ur designe-pill
- i agree completely.. the straps need to be good..autoflavour
- GET A ROOM!!!! GEEEZZ!!!!Hombre_Lobo
- only if you are in there watchingautoflavour
- me too! hahaha.. I've learn a lot!Miesfan

Anyway, the comp is still open for a few days.. if you guys are feeling inspired..
- again e-pill, inspired by the idea of the transformer, although applied in a totally different wayautoflavour
