i'm sharing a cable internetconnection with 2 other people in this house using a router.
i'm using a mac, they're on pc. is it technically possible that they can look into my shared folders or find out where i'm hanging out on the internet, what URL's i'm visiting etc?

something to declare?

eeehhr... maybe.

doubt it, just don't turn file sharing on. they would need a username and password set up to get into your stuff. doubt they could tell where you have been either, unless some sort of big brother software is installed.
paranoia will destroy ya.

It wasnt clear... do you want them to be able to do this, or do you want to prevent it?
Both are possible...depends on your settings. You could also add on a software firewall if you are really paranoid.

ribit, i was just wondering if someone else, connected to the same router, is able to trace the URL's i've visited.
and if this is possible, i do want prevent it.
(nb: i'm a mac user - other 2 people connected to the router are pc users, "ITC people", knowing everyting about pc's/programming etc...)

It would be easy to intercept the packets from your computer and then see what where when from your computer
Mac or PC doesnt matter much since the sniffer would be searching for raw data packs
To answer your question , yes, if they wanted to see the content that travels across the connection they could if they knew where to look.

yeah, unless they know enough about TCP/IP to sniff the network, just don't turn on filesharing and use a unique domain/workgroup.

what are you hiding

sounds like somebody is embarassed about looking at all the n'sync web rings ;)

I mean why do you care if they catch you watching some nasty porn or stuff. It's your life and you shouldn't care what people think about you. Unless, of course you're looking at some sick sadistic sites and animal porn in which case you should seek professional help :)
But as I said, you shouldn't care man. And some people said here, yes it's very much possible to intercept packets of data and extract info from them. Nothing is fully secured.

didn't know that it is so easy to trace those data...
but what to do if i don't want them to know i'm visiting http://www.christineleduc.com a lot...
(me: "just an example!" - all NT'ers: "yeah, right!").

thats a tame site, I would be proud if they found that in my history folder.
