maybe you should ask what type of budget they have, that way if it is higher, you can say "hmmmm, we can work with that.", and if its too low, you can say, "hmmmm, we calculated the job at 15k." give it a shot, never hurts to ask how much $ they have in their wallets :)
btw, 15k is low.

yeah a cap point is nice to work with.
sometimes i feel strange charging hourly when designing- especially with the amount of procrastinating that happens...
ie- "$150 worth of work and all i've done is create some rollovers!.. oh well, need the money!"

sorry to go off topic, but i wonder : the other day on thread we were speaking about average income , and apparently yours in the Us were much higher than us in europe. so. and now i read that if you charge 60 an hours and sell a flash site for 15000 $ it's good for you.
My point is , i do'nt get it : yes we get lower salaries but hey, 15000 here won't get u anywhere, apart from a 3 page flash showcase : nothing dynamic, no dev, no tools.. : just the basic basic.. nice design of course : but basic dev.i'm doing a dynamic portal right now with 2 coders and some flash and the bill is growing to 48000 euros..
i mean.. how comes ? the contradiction is kind of interesting .. means we're beeen ripped off double down here to get lower wages and sell higher !!
:)
shite..

They will always be overly priced sites whne the agencies that are charging this are trying to re-coup money for their staff that have been sat around twiddling their thumbs (especially those 3 account managers!)

50 sounds fair.
- shellie0
yeah i think so too... since its actually a 2 person team that would be working on it. designer and programmer.
- JazX0
no 50 sounds right if not 55 to 60
- jevad0
hit them for 60 - and drop it to 50 if need be....
- shellie0
yeah. a friend of mine did a bunch of stuff for mtv at 50 bucks an hour through his old boss as a freelancer and his old boss still made a killing in profit so what he was really charging was unbelievable

The difference is people are thinking 50 is a lot. I can't imagine a firm billing a client for less than $80 per hour for any ecmployee, and more for the higher ups.
So even though 15 k may look like a lot for someone freelancing, it is nothing for a firm. Typically, a firm will bill for at least 3 times what they pay you, so if you are making $16 and hour, that's at least 50 they bill out, but probably much higher. You simply could not pay over head without it or get ahead.
So I agree, 15 k seems like nothing for this type of site. A good game will be seriuos development and problem solving, not just making another site.
I know in my business, the fist large bid I put in (to a friends company, so I had an inside scoop as to the other bids) I was less than 1/3 of the next bid, but I thought it was huge cash.
Things to keep in mind. $50 per hour freelancing, with no over head, is not too bad, but for a firm to bill out an entire site for that would be suicide.

For straight HTML I usually charge $50-60/hr, but Flash work is almost always $75.
For a more complex project such as this I'd charge a little more... you can always go down if need be.
Don't sell yourself short. ;-)

'bout a buck fitty
- shellie0
75 an hour would be like a 15000 dollar site. which would i guess not be so bad as a lot of design firms would probably charge that as starting bids for a project like this. sounds good :)

Well... I know I'm saving some of the responses to this thread for future reference - never know when you're gonna need some back up artilary on a tightass client ;D
- mbr0
Yeah, for a site like that you should charge extra. For anything custom, like a game, you should increase your fees. I'd do that just because their inevitably will be million "I think I like that, but can we see 50 more?" type questions. I'd be very specific about what you will provide, too, as a game can be horrible if done poorly.
I'd guess (but I really have no idea) that 15k for the game alone wouldn't be that outrageous, assuming it's more than tic tac toe.
- shellie0
are you kidding mbr? i would assume it would be pretty alright for 15k as the total package. w/ games site and everything.. all the downloadables liek wallpapers, ecards, aim icons, and screensavers included.. with a pretty extensive site.
so youre saying thats probably not enough? 15 total?
- wonderwagon0
...$666 per hour, always.
love,

hee hee, only from ww

I am hoping to be getting a 15K gig soon for a Flash-based Health Care site.

15 k for a site like that sounds like peanuts to me.
but hey, if you go any lower: let's all join to kill our business and credibility.
