OK... just lookin' for a little help from the NT peeps. I'm movin' to San Fran this weekend for at least 3 months and I'm lookin' for a place to find shelter.
I've checked rent.com, apartments.com, all that jazz and found some decent studios (I think) for a little over 1000. Most of them require long term lease though, and although I may be there longer I might not..
Are there any areas I should avoid/be drawn towards? I'll be working downtown and would like to be walking/very easy commuting distance. I am sworn mortal enemies with the commute.
Maybe by chance someone on here even has a spare room for rent!
Basically, any info you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

the housing is cheap(er) there now than ever before... but try easyroomates.com

i found my place in SF through,
everybody in SF that has a place open always posts there. And there are always places open now. I live around the Haight area which is pretty cool and a very easy commute via the Muni (public transport) to downtown. Good Luck.

check out sfgate.com and craigslist.com
good luck man- this isn't an easy place to find a spot. You might want to try commuting from Oakland(cheaper)

Craigslist.com is a good call. Areas? Well, The Western Addition/Richmond areas aren't bad, but not as far out as the Sunset. Living close to downtown isn't always the greatest, unless you live up towards Nob Hill, where consequently the rents are higher, but on the whole rent has been going down a tad. Stay out of the Tenderloin. The MUNI train or Bus has enough frequency so you don't miss a beat, technically, you don't need a car. Unless you want to pay rent for it, or drive around all day trying to find space. Around the Haight/Panhandle isn't bad either. If you could get a live/work South of Market (SOMA), I'd be happy for you. If I had a choice to choose all over again, it'd be on Potrero Hill (Potrero) if you get high enough on the hill, you'll see a nice Panoram of the city, and Bay Bridge. Plus the folks out there are, well, nice. The Mission is the hispanic enclave, but there are lotsa indie kids and young cool folk there. My favorite bar is the Skylark and the Elbo Room is good, too. Docs Clock.
You'll have fun. Welcome aboard. If you're playing for the other team, you'll love the Castro.

You know what N8, he's right. I escaped to the southbay (Well I bought a house) But Rent is cheaper on the East or South Side. North East Oakland, Berkeley are great spots. YOu can always take the BART Train in to SF. Good luck holmes.

Well, we'll give you a reason to drink coffee around here, so you better like it! Those dotcom San Francisco days are long gone. No more ping pong and playstation. Just hours of banner work, masking, and what not. You'll like all the lovely ladies walking around in their business ensembles downtown/ or dudes, if thats your thing. I don't know what you drink, but if you like Starbucks, you'll be pretty happy alright.

If you like Starbucks, you are free to roam as you wish.

well, not much of a starbucks guy, but ladies in business ensembles == yay!

Don't worry then, there's a few Muddy Waters coffe shops, coupla Peets Coffe & Tea's around, A few Sacred Grounds if McStarBucks ain't your thing. Plus a bunch of other coffee houses scattered here and there that a more community-wise.

dont settle for starbucks! go one more block for some good java, some pints down below at the bank or pbr at the TT up the hill. and dont worry n8... no banner ads and shit like that. remember we are still here cause we didnt throw all our eggs in the bogus web economy. gonna hit the ground running... hungover, tired and with a raiders victory over that florida-swine!!!!
