Craigslist.com is a good call. Areas? Well, The Western Addition/Richmond areas aren't bad, but not as far out as the Sunset. Living close to downtown isn't always the greatest, unless you live up towards Nob Hill, where consequently the rents are higher, but on the whole rent has been going down a tad. Stay out of the Tenderloin. The MUNI train or Bus has enough frequency so you don't miss a beat, technically, you don't need a car. Unless you want to pay rent for it, or drive around all day trying to find space. Around the Haight/Panhandle isn't bad either. If you could get a live/work South of Market (SOMA), I'd be happy for you. If I had a choice to choose all over again, it'd be on Potrero Hill (Potrero) if you get high enough on the hill, you'll see a nice Panoram of the city, and Bay Bridge. Plus the folks out there are, well, nice. The Mission is the hispanic enclave, but there are lotsa indie kids and young cool folk there. My favorite bar is the Skylark and the Elbo Room is good, too. Docs Clock.
You'll have fun. Welcome aboard. If you're playing for the other team, you'll love the Castro.
