Former Clash frontman Joe Strummer is dead. He was 50.

thats pretty shocking news!
especially as i've been wqtching a lot of alex cox films lately (he acted in and did the score to a few of them). The film and the soundtrack to Walker is great. I think the film might be hard to find, but its definately worth checking out if you like to think.
Wasn't Strummer touring at the moment?
very sad

Wow, that's really shocking news. I was really hoping to see them get together and play when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Thanks for the good music Joe.

Almost didn't believe this when I saw it this morning on Google news. Fuck.
Just listening to the Mescaleros last night while doing some work. Joe was one of the true highlights in music culture of the last 50 years. If you don't know his work in detail then you've missed out.
Peace to you Mr. Strummer.

Ironic to have a hero a man who discouraged the cult of the hero --- but Joe was deserving. He shaped my life, my art, my career, and the lens through which I view the world. Thank you Joe. May your spirit return to us in another voice. I'm depressed that the 'stylin' shoes' topic has more posts than this --- but I guess that's the way of this shitty world.

didn't he also head Big Audio Dynamite or am I wrong here? They were also good.

either way he was a REAL talent, regardless

B.A.D. is a Mick Jones project (the other singer-lyricist-leader of The Clash). Stummer's recent output was with his band the Mescalero's, and if you don't have the last album, Global A-GoGo, you should plunk down the cash --- it's a great record, sadly now a final bit of Stummer sound.

i agree its a shame, but at least i can take comfort in playing 'sandinista' all day at work.
which was the one clash album i never truly understood when i was a kid. but the older i got the more that record became the one clash record i couldn't stop playing.it has to be the closest thing in punk rock to 'sgt. peppers'. it redefined what a punk band could be.
Political and Revolutionary.

Jeffferson, you hit the nail almost on the head. I always thought of London Calling as their Sgt. Pepper and Sandanista as their White Album. That band was the one truly serious band of their era. The three albums in three years: London Calling, Sandanista, Combat Rock are as good a trifecta as any in music history. What a giant talent. I always wanted to see the Mescaleros. I saw the Clash tour with the Who in '82, without Mick Jones in 1984, too.
