disagree on the yamaha basses. I borrowed one when I started on bass and it was awful. I now have an epiphone non-reverse thunderbird, which is great.
but you're right about price. that's why I recommended the MIJ ones. Even the mexican fenders can be good (they're just more hit and miss, so best to try a LOT of them in the shop). Most of the Epiphone basses are good for the price, and quite a few other brands offer some competitive models.
There's little use springing for US Fenders or Gibsons unless you can clearly feel and hear the quality difference (which comes with time/experience)
