I can speak from both ends of the spectrum. I own a G3 iBook and the backlight went after a year (weird connector thing). Out of my pocket it would've cost me nearly $500 to fix.
I'm actually working for a computer service group right now and let me tell you, people have all kinds of issues with their computers. I can't ever imagine NOT buying a warranty with my computer purchases. It'll pay for itself the first time you use it. Not many people come out unscathed.
