    in response to Jagara above..
    guilty as charged.

can I do everything I do on a laptop? definitely
is it as fun? definitely not

    people spend money on hobbies.

some people have cars they only drive once a year and spend 364 days polishing and tuning. Other people get tattoos, others collect baseball cards, sneakers..

I would argue if people like collecting hardware and tinkering away at, what's the problem?

I have zero interest in being a musician for a living, or even really putting that much music out.. I do it because its a nice escape for me.. its a thing I have been doing for 25+ years and I enjoy making all the machines talk to each other.

I assume this post wasn't about me, maybe it was, I will be ignorant on that .. but given I was instantly tagged in the comments I figured I would weigh in.

I guess I would argue that at least, compared to other things people collect, I can at least creatively express my ideas using them. I like sneakers, but wearing a pair of shoes doesn't give me the same expression as making a song..

as for modular synths.. its the nerd level of an already nerdy past time.. its the I have too much disposable income and didn't buy a sportscar for my middle aged crisis

    • not to mention, its all just money sitting there waiting to be sold again. need 5k in 2 days, drop some modular and bam.. solved.autoflavour
    • I sense Jagara is just a purist and hates people having hobbiesautoflavour
    • and to be honest, can I do everything on a laptop isn't accurate anyway.. even with emulations the quirky inconsistency of some devices just happen by accidentautoflavour
    • in my time making music I went from completely outside of the box, to completely inside and now a hybrid, where its mostly outside againautoflavour
    • also, ALDI laptop LOL.. brah I have 2019 MacBook Pro i9 and I am constantly pushing it to CPU overload.. you underestimateautoflavour
    • well said. i don't have a shit ton of equipment, mostly reason, and it provides me with many happy hours of farting about making horriblehans_glib
    • noises that everyone else finds pretty objectionable. their loss.hans_glib
    • On a completely different note, @hans_glib, I've been seeing your latest posts on IG. Don't know where you are, but it looks seaside-y!Continuity
    • @autoflavor I made a semi-joking comment about a very general pet peeve of mine, in a thread called "Punches For:". Don't take it so personally, dude ;)jagara
    • Hey Auto, I tagged you as I love how much gear you have and I know you're massive synth geek.Ianbolton
    • I don't care what people use to make their music as long as they're finding something they love and can try new thingsIanbolton
    • when Shape said "All that equipment and no melody, groove, or creativity. So melody and groove are what makes good music? Nah mate!Ianbolton
    • all good.. just wanted to chime in.. the all gear no idea crowd bug me also, but gotta start somewhere I guess.autoflavour
    • and if im honest, its the all gear no idea crowd who then go on to sell all the gear cheaply when they realise its not for them.. so its win win.autoflavour
    • its a delicate ecosystem .. host and parasiteautoflavour
