Tell me about living in NYC.

How much to live comfortably not wealthy? Entertainment, excercise, food, travel, etc. What to expect, what wears people down, what to avoid?

May have a job opportunity there.

    • i thought that place has too many leftist commies, eco terrorist feminist. for you :/pango
    • Probably does. I will turn NYC into a conservative firebrand.Hayoth
    • $180k plus some benefits (only half sarcastic)monospaced
    • Everything you want and need is nearby, at all times. The money you won’t spend on a car is spent on creature comforts and weeknight entertainment.monospaced
    • If you are a right winger go to staten island and you will feel at homedocpoz
    • Seriously 180g?Hayoth
    • Breakdown costs, rent, electricity, travel, entertainment, internet, subway?Hayoth
    • It was a half inside joke, but not far off.monospaced
    • Rent is $2k a month min. If you want something comfortable, you’ll spend closer to $4-5k+ at least. Everything else is 25% more than elsewhere.monospaced
    • Bills are standard and some utilities are included in rent even. Groceries are very expensive, but restaurants are quality. A night out is $100-200 dependingmonospaced
    • your first mistake is "comfortably". People who live comfortably live elsewhere. Well-off people in NYC have wealth.MrAbominable
    • Having a car and parking in Manhattan isn’t worth the trouble or costs. Subway rides are $2.50+ now! Monthly is a lot but good if you use it daily.monospaced
    • if i were to do it all over again... i'd move here with just a suitcase and sublet/roommate in a few neighborhoods the first year before moving your stuff in.MrAbominable
    • Before i decided to move back to LA, the only apt I found that I liked was $3300 and 1 block away from serious projects in bedstuy.shellie
    • It's honestly easier with roommates if you don't want to spent 2k+ for a closet sized studio. Then ur talking 1k per room. Take 2 rooms, have an den/ office.shellie
    • Places like Harlem, you can get a larger master bedroom. Places like LES, Chelsea are really loud. I stayed at the Hotel Chelsea for 8 months.shellie
    • I prefer to house swap LA for N.Y. on off season, deep winter and hottest of summer & I usually get amazing places that way. The permanent move didn't work 4 meshellie
    • depends on where you want to live Hayoth - there are ways to keep costs low if you look & have patience. btw there are a ton of foodcoops +farmermarkets ifnotype
    • you're in to that.notype
    • A lot of solid/accurate info above. I'll ad my 2¢: Studio/1BR will go for about $2k. As mentioned you can get more value if you get a 2BR+ with a roommate(s)duckseason
    • Also, you can get a bit more for your money if you move away from the city into certain neighborhoods in Queens, BK, or the Bronx (or even NJ...).duckseason
    • Drinks: $6-7 for a beer, $12-15 for cocktails. $13 for a film ticket. Gym will vary greatly depending on where you sign up - $20-100/mo+.duckseason
    • Food can be as cheap or as expensive as you want, really. Traveling locally means you have to rent a car (unless you're going somewhere by bus/train)duckseason
    • Cheapest car rentals are at the airports and will cost around $300 for a weekend. Bus will be around $40, train varies but can get pretty expensive.duckseason
    • I loved living in NYC (15 years) but am happy to be out. What wore me down was the weather, cost (housing specifically), it's quite a dirty city...duckseason
    • ...there's trash everywhere. This was most noticeable upon returning from other cities. People are/can be shit - not everyone, but just takes that one person...duckseason
    • ...causing shit on a crowded train in the morning to start the day off on the wrong foot...duckseason
    • Save some money by getting a bike - NYC is pretty flat and easy to get around + a great way to get to know they city. Get a good lock...duckseason
    • ... and/or avoid leaving outside if possible. NYC is an amazing place, but definitely not for everyone.duckseason
    • Hayoth, do it! I was born and raised here... and still falling more and more in love w/ it (and the ppl here) every day.notype
    • like duckseason said, it's not for everyone, and to you Hayoth, it'd just be a massive liberal safe space where everyone is successful and not bigots.monospaced
    • You would despise every moment, and every person, since you disagree with their opinions. You would be in a constant triggered state. NYC is not for you.monospaced
    • $185k sounds high but if you pay rent it might not be that crazy. I'm lucky to own so I'm not a typical case.CyBrainX
    • I guess I was the last person to respond three years ago. I would also highly recommend using a bike. You'll save more than $1000/yr, get exercise and be less..CyBrainX
    • frustrated than using mass transit. Cars are an absurdity. Even if it gets stolen, you're still better off.CyBrainX
