Apple just needs to release their OS commercially (or open source) without any support. They opened sourced their Swift language and Darwin (the underlying system of OSX) is open source.

Most of the people who buy Macs are only in it for the OS. My hackintosh runs like a dream, but I keep an apple machine for App Store submissions since I'm paranoid. Otherwise, I'd run a hackintosh for everything.

I know it's a pipe dream, but I could see lots of people that wouldn't by a MBP shelling out the license fee for OSX. At maybe $199 or something. Especially desktop / laptop companies. Which could potentially equal the same sales they're getting for Macs.

Plus, they need people to develop for iOS. And you need macOS for that. If tomorrow is a flop, I'm gonna let my apple dev license expire in December, and say fuck it. I'll still have my hackintosh for osx builds, but no app store. Whatever.
