  there's no problem with luke being on the island waiting for them. in all likelihood, he sensed it was time to return to the world, and probably activated R2D2 himself remotely to give them the rest of the map.

  re: why is he out there in the first place? he's a jedi master. he has mysterious reasons. it's not hard for me to suspend disbelief on that.
