    Note: if you're mostly using wireless and don't need network drive support, you probably don't need a pricey Airport Extreme, a refurbished Airport Express ($65 in the US) will suit in most cases.

    It's marketed as a supporting device, but it is more powerful than it looks. The main difference is it only has one outgoing Ethernet port and no USB drive support (no 802.11ac yet either if you were going to use it). Other than that it is a very capable router.

    I tried using a popular TP-Link for a while, but it turned out to have a weaker range with its 3 antennas than my 2008 Airport Express and there was an irritating lag with most devices, they took 1-3 seconds to log back into the network after unlocking.

    The added bonus of an Airport Express is that it is an AirPlay streamer you can send music to your audio system with from any Mac, iPhone, iPad — in CD-quality.
