I have noticed during a full day of using my machine that I have to restart my wifi connection or switch SSIDs once or twice a day when the throughput on the wifi interface drops to just a few bps, but then it starts working again as soon as it reconnects.
As for your 802.1x problem, I haven't suffered that inconvenience yet. I'm surprised that they're stating that they won't support 802.1x networks given how much Apple equipment is in the education sector, and how many institutions use 802.1x as their authentication protocol. Until a fix is released is there a browser-based email service you can use to send the important stuff? That might help with getting around the dropouts...
