    The idea, I believe, is that the virus is dormant in living human carriers and activates when the host dies. But a bite introduces the already active virus into the body.

    But the Dale leg thing, and the hunters argued it, wouldn;t cooking over open flame have cleansed it? 90C or 194F is enough heat to kill even the most heat tolerant known virii and the food would likely get that hot over an open flame.

    Though this is all more flawed given the amount of interaction with the walkers through touch and bodily fluids that would surely find it's way into mucous membranes or open wounds eventually. They are so cavalier about that.

    But that's why it's fun fiction.
