Do you think George Lucas was surprised at the reaction to the light sabre? I mean, it's really just an LED sword, or glow-in-the-dark. What an obvious idea for a futuristic film: A sword with a light in it! Any yet it's become such a huge culturally significant object. Everyone knows it. It's one of the most recognizable Star Wars things, even for people who haven't seen the films. I don't think he would've predicted it being THAT popular.

    • was a v.clever idea imho. swords made of light - not obvious at all.fadein11
    • Yeah, I mean, it's a pretty good idea. But it doesn't seem like an amazing idea that would become part of the global lexicon.nb
    • Easy to say almost 40 years later, having grown up with the idea.ETM
    • Though I am sure a laser sword likely pre-dates SW somewhere, in literature or other material.ETM
