Your first one reminds me of "In the Line of Fire" with Clint Eastwood and John Malkovich. Sort of... He had a composite derringer-style 4-shot pistol that he made himself in his plot to kill the president, and there were a couple of scenes of him assembling it. It's been a while since I've seen it, but there MAY have been a scene with the cops in his place, but I don't remember.
