...besides, a conspiracy of the "sandy hook" type rests on the assumption that the end goal of the government is to seize the personal weapons of citizens in order to smooth the seizure of power and limit the scope of an armed insurrection.
It ridiculous prima face because a) the government already has the levers of power in hand b) the use of small arms fire in a rebellion within the context of some sort of "coup" by a subsegment of the government is simply futile, and those in power know it c) the only thing a coup government would be concerned about it the loyalty of the military and/or intelligence services to it's cause.
A bunch of jackasses playing wolverine in the forest are not a legitimate threat to government seizure of power.
Mass protest is.
Oddly enough the conspiracy theorists and gun nuts are exactly the same people who discount the proven effectiveness of mass protest, nor do they speak up when free speech rights are infringed. I would have liked to see a bunch of these 2nd amendment types show up and stand around when the Bush (and subsequently Obama) administrations created and used 'free speech zones" to control public protest.
of course, they sat at home, missing the whole point. What good is it if you claim that the threat of violence is what maintains an individuals rights in the face of a tyrannical government but are only will to utilize that threat of violence to maintain your right to continue to maintain that right only?
