  Who wouldn't want to extricate themselves form the immediate area? You'd have to be suicidal not to. It's about self-preservation, regardless of the status of his guilt. Saying he should have stayed where he was is to ask him to turn himself over to a lynch mob. And if you'd like to see him lynched, then you are no better than the guilty person you think he is.
