I just went through this the past few weeks as I have a Macpro at work and a newly acquired mbp for personal/side use.

this is what I've settled on for the time being (pretty much close to what everyone has already said):

    1. Use google gmail/calendar/contacts.
    2. In system preferences activate syncing via gmail for ical, ichat, address book, mac mail, etc.
    3. dropbox is fucking awesome. I use it for my current projects. They have a free account with 2gb of storage. You'll have a dropbox folder on your iMac and one on your mbp. Anything you save in there is automatically uploaded/updated across your whole system. I also keep things like safari bookmarks, wacom pref's, etc in here.

I say "settled" on because I'm basically waiting for apple's iCloud to come out. This will have 5gb storage and better syncing/integration into the OS. Currently the only thing I'm missing with my setup is there is no way to sync reminders in iCal
