sounds like a tough position. I for one wouldn't fuck an employer over like that (unless they deserved it), nor would I want to work for a company/boss who thinks so little of loyalty.
Best situation you could hope for is your current employer understands and allows you to contract out while you transition over. I wouldn't be happy, but if it's a great move for you I'd be happy you were moving on to better things.
Be honest with your current employer. And for God's sake, have the nuts to tell your possible new boss that you would have appreciated more time to give your old firm. Being a pussy this early on sets the tone for a not so happy relationship later...
