    if you do any illegal phone/txt-based activity, pass-protect your phone. if a cop frisks you for anything (say you're at a party and you look high or whatever and thus has just cause to search you) he has the right to go through your phone and look at your emails, txt messages, phone calls, contacts, etc. any excuse is enough. if you've got a dealer in there they'll bust him and follow the chain of supply upwards, which turns you into an unwilling snitch that will bring down the whole game.

    BUT...

    if your phone is locked and required a pass to unlock it, there's a loophole that says he cannot demand the password, saving you and your friends' asses. just say you decline to provide that information and you're fine.

    i know this applies to california, not sure about other places.
