PS3 if you want to use the system as more of a home theater center. It has better codec support, it has PS3 Media Server software for transcoding on-fly allowing you to stream almost anything to it. HD audio (7.1 in both TrueHD and DTS-MA, plus uncompressed). None of these things work on Xbox 360. Especially audio and codec support. Xbox 360 is severely limited to mediocrity in this regard.

PS3 however is not a "social and gaming" machine as Xbox 360 is.
All fanboy rhetoric aside about paying for whatever.. Xbox 360 online experience and overall multiplayer stuff trumps anything from Sony. Sony just didn't pay attention to this and concentrated on creating better hardware instead of building up an awesome online service. They are playing catch up now but they are still so behind Microsoft it's not really even comparable.

They just launched a new service Playstation Plus that's supposed to come closer to XBox Live and they will of course charge for it but I'm really hesitant to recommend anything from them at this point until it's proven and everyone uses it. No such issue with Xbox 360.

    In short:

If your kid or you game, has friends online (they will most likely have Xbox 360 btw) and will play a lot of games as multiplayer and doesn't care so much for purist 50mbps 1080p video and 7.1 HD audio.. Xbox 360 will provide you with superior experience.

If this machine will be in the center of your living room, you just got that seriously awesome TV and speaker system where you want the sickest HD 1080p video and audio and mostly play games in single player or with very few friends online. PS3 is the best choice.

Considering that you have PSP, PS3 might be definitely a better choice.

One thing to note though is Kinect. I really think this thing will explode and everyone will want it. Just seeing Dance Central and boxing and all that physical stuff for kids and families, Kinect will destroy both Wii and PS3. It's seriously some revolutionary shit.

My 2 cents (btw, I have both PS3 and Xbox 360 and PSP and all that).. I hardly ever use PSP with PS3.. though I can definitely see an appeal to buy games from PSN Store and get it to your PSP.
