my understanding is that for a design to truly be timeless, you must remove ALL style/trend from it, so that you simply cannot place it in a time period when viewed out of context.
perhaps the reason it's so easy to say "there's no such thing as a timeless design" is that creating a design that is visually appealing while being utterly devoid of style is a fucking difficult thing to do and there are very few examples. some of the only few true examples of timeless design would be simple shapes. circles, squares, triangles etc could have been created by early man just as they could be created by modern man. the swastika above comes close, but you can still date it back to ancient, eastern asia.
incidentally, i feel that with the saturation of current media with corporations fighting for your brain time with the flashiest ads and design has moved us into an era where timelessness is no longer an imperative. timeless, basic shapes don't grab you by the balls in the way that paint drips and crazy color palettes do.
