Art is subjective. With that said, designs from advertising in the early 1900s (pick a generation actually) have become art collectibles. I think we are, as a collective culture, much more aware of these designs than other generations for various reasons (call it accessibility). As a result, we are quick to personally define many of these designers' works as art, whereas we wouldn't have thought of them as anything but ads 50-100 years ago.
Maybe I'm wrong. I'm having a lovely egg salad sandwich.
