Yeah, you might be right; but I'm thinking of this in terms of melodrama .. which is more to do with style. I reckon that the choice to ham-it-up a bit is a stylistic decision which adds to the overall greatness of the show. Maybe the period, in many people's minds, is referenced by a lot of melodrama's that were being produced at the time.
But perhaps I'm being too forgiving...?
