    it's better to not edit the css in the dashboard, just create a new theme:

    (wordpress folder)/wp-content/themes/ *copy one of the folders and rename to your own themename*

    open the style.css inside that folder.. edit the first lines of that file to represent your own information. This should register your custom theme in the WP Dashboard.

    start editing away at style.css
