  There are drawbacks to having an unlocked, carrier free iPhone of course: there is no warranty if you don't activate the phone with the official carrier.
  You cannot update phone firmware until each new version is taken care of with hackers. They've been quick recently though.

  For those who are afraid to jailbreak their AT&T or O2 handset, here's what unlocking software looks like:
  

  

  
  "Refurbish" option restores the phone to factory, locked state if you need to use your warranty.
