    its a great model for mass transit, yet another great 19th century british idea, the problem is that it (and other UK systems, our up here in particular) haven't been able to keep pace efficiently with the demands placed on it over the years and has become a mess.

    It doesn't help that we run a different track guage to the rest of europe, meaning that all the rolling stock in britain needs to be made bespoke and costs far more than in say Germany or France.

    My brother once said that the best thing that ever happened to a lot of european countires in this regard was being leveled to the ground during teh 2nd WW and having to start from scratch and all use the same basic system.
