the content defines the structure of the grid, not the other way around.

As oppose to the grid defining the content? Of course the type of content should define the grid to a certain degree but thats not he point of a grid. A grid is used to organized that content is a well constructed and meaningful manner.
Also the dimensions of the site you are designing also has a lot to do with defining the grid.
