I would really push the fact at just how much you would welcome the oppurtunity to work on this exciting project for six months, but hold firm on the ££ side and really push (in a very nice way) the fact that they are getting exceptional value for money for what you will do for them and enthusiasm you will bring to it. Try and build worth, if they are decent and know you skills they should wise up to them paying you 3k extra might just equate to a happier and more productive person to have on board.... my 2p
