I agree, you have to steer clear of 'mosaic', and start thinking laterally about what it is the DO.
The only one I liked was 7, but I dont really think it suits the charity, just looks nice though the kerning is poor.
Personally, the concept that immediately springs to mind is 'conduit', I see this word linked with the roman era in their technologies re irrigation/sewage disposal, and it means to bring things together, bringing ideas togather, it is what they do. I would therefore look down this angle and produce a logo based on the channelling and streamlining of ideas and information.
