It comes in handy to telnet or ssh to a webserver, personally i think it's very handy to change ownership and rights for directorys etc... For the mac it self i only use it some times to remove some files, when the machine tells me i have no rights or something to do this. But you gotta know what youre doing cause terminal wont ask any questions or warn you about what youre donig. So best to learn some unix comaands before you start with terminal.
