For you Americans: the reason why the Canadian Prime Minister is suddenly talking tough about America is because he's up for election and most Canadians aren't pro-war in iraq etc. So he figures he can get some brownie points with voters.
As far as the US backlash, that only helps him really. Now as far as the softwood lumber issued goes, he should have acted about 2 years earlier on that one.
(basically what happened was some US agency heavily taxed our lumber imports which is against the free trade agreement. This meant that US wood people were cheaper and our lumber industry's stability was hit hard.
The US needs canadian imports to meet their lumber needs too.. so really it isn't very nice of the states to let us get screwed.
