Not-For-Profit Freelance Rates Jun 9, 10, 1:24 p.m.
I have a friend that's helping a not-for-profit with their expenditure planning and needs to know what the going rate for design (and probably development) is. Also please note whether working for a non-profit affects your rates. I don't really do much freelance so my input probably won't count for much. Any help is appreciated. :)
Web Dev at a University Jan 19, 10, 6:25 p.m.
I'm currently at a large agency and not terribly happy, and a position I'm qualified for has come up but the sort of web sites universities have tend to be... uninspiring. The money, more or less, is comparable, at least in the near term. I'm not overly inclined to take a shot at it but my wife insists that a university gig would look good on my resume (and it's union so paid overtime and all that nonsense). So any of you folks have any experience being a developer for a university?
Thanks.
Migrating to PC Sep 1, 09, 6:25 a.m.
You've got to help a Mac guy out. I need to start using a PC for web development with my new job and it's been years since I've last used a PC so I don't know the go-to apps anymore. I'm primarily looking to replace:
- Coda
- Transmit
- xScope
- MAMP Pro
- Versions
I prefer free or inexpensive since it's only a contract gig right now and don't really want to drop a bunch of money if I'm not going to be using any of these in a year. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Web Site Tech. Requirements Mar 17, 09, 10:21 a.m.
Can anybody point me in the direction of a decent resource for writing technical requirements documentation, both high- and low-level? It would be fantastic to see some examples. I've done a couple medium-level documents, I guess, so I have a good idea about what to do but I am interested in seeing people with more experience with this would do.
(This document should cover things from what languages the site will be coded in all the way to database and server architecture.)
Thanks for any help!
Toronto Metalwork Artist Mar 12, 09, 4:52 p.m.
I have a logo I'd like to have cast in metal. I'd like to use a local artist for this, so if anybody happens to have any recommendations for me, feel free to share. :) I will also consider a proper sign maker if the quality is good.
Thanks!
Multi-language site May 6, 08, 8:56 a.m.
Does anybody have any experience in building sites in multiple languages? We've done a few in Flash that just used separate XML files but I'm building a little PHP framework and need to decide on a standard before I get too far along.
I don't want to duplicate the site's pages themselves so the way I see it I either need to pull the content in from a database or from flat files (includes, XML, or whatever). I've been doing some reading but haven't seen a compelling argument either way.
Thanks for any input.
Flash mouse position Sep 10, 07, 9:33 p.m.
When the cursor is over the stage I want to trigger a function and then another function when it rolls out.
I have a couple ideas for this and I think the best one is to find the x and y position of the mouse and if both are greater than 0 assume the user is over the stage, otherwise assume they aren't.
ie.
if(_xmouse > 0 && _ymouse > 0) {
this.function
} else {
that.function
}
Does this sound like a reasonable solution, and if so, what's the best way to keep checking these values?
Thanks.
Coda slow Aug 14, 07, 6:10 p.m.
Is it just me and my slow ass Powerbook, or does anybody else find that Code really grinds on files with over 1000 or 1500 lines?
Guess the Job Title Apr 27, 07, 8:34 p.m.
I'm the only web guy at a medium size company (~300 people). If it goes online, it's probably my responsibility.
• I am in the Marketing department, but assist the Art Department and Information Services when needed.
• I design the web site.
• I do increasing amounts of coding, including HTML, CSS, JS, and PHP.
• I do email newsletters.
• I liaise with the out-of-country developers and make sure the web store keeps humming along.
• I do SEO.
• I analyze traffic stats.
• Other tasks as assigned - usually fulfilling requests for order forms, product data/images, and the like.
Do you know what my job title is? If so, please share because I've no damn clue, but I think Web Designer is a bit of a stretch. Are people actually "webmasters"?
Studiometry 44% off Jan 28, 07, 10:11 p.m.
I know some freelancers here use and recommend this app for time and job tracking, so I thought I'd link to this Mac Update promo. You have 22.5 hours from now to take advantage of the rather deep discount.
Car Stolen Dec 10, 06, 9:51 a.m.
Some ass stole our car from the underground parkade last night. If the police don't find it, I hope it's because they drove off the side of a bridge.

Messed Up Dream Nov 11, 06, 10:31 a.m.
I had a dream where a few friends and I, only one of whom I actually know / exists, went to a strange drug bar thing and everybody places orders for drugs I could only imagine were weed in my dream, but I'm pretty sure the terms were made up and some of the stuff sure wasn't pot. So anyway, we're all sitting around this little room in the establishment getting high, except me which makes total sense because I don't use in real life. Well, at some point one of the freind's friend gets all riled up and starts giving me a blow job, which isn't too weird since it's my dream, but as the onlookers tell me, the she's actually a he, but you can't tell 'cause he is a spitting image of Fairuza Balk.
Well, what's extra weird about all of this is that it all apparently takes place during my lunch break and being the sober, responsible one I hoof it back to work only 30 minutes late.
So not normally one to interpret dreams I'm wondering this: am I supposed to get a job closer to downtown or what?
Batch compress PDFs Sep 27, 06, 7:33 a.m.
I've got a couple thousand PDFs in almost as many subfolders that range from 1 page to, I don't know, 40 pages, and I need to compress them while maintaining the basic password security. I haven't found anything that does the trick yet and I'm open to suggestions for Mac or PC. Free would be great, but we'll pay. Hell, it's not my budget. ;)
Thanks!
Halifx Photographers Aug 25, 06, 10:24 p.m.
So my lady friend and I are planning our wedding in Nova Scotia for next year and I'm looking for a good photographer. They don't have to specialize in weddings just so long as they're talented. I get tired of the rote smile and look at the camera fare...
Surely the good folks of NT know the right person for the job (hell, maybe it's YOU) so I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks!
My New Job May 13, 06, 12:04 p.m.
I have a new job at my company to oversee the redesign and development of our entire web presence. I've had some experience in this but not on such a scope or with any sort of budget. What I'm asking is what I might need to keep myself organized and on track. My first day on the job is Monday but what I know now is that my first priority is to map everything out (and to presumably track down content) which will then be provided to the firm handling the development. I will probably be meeting these people in person as well.
I'm sure I can figure it out as I go but I'm on a tight deadline and don't have much room for mistakes.
So, finally, any recommendations for software* or tips from those who've been there before will be greatly appreciated. This is a great opportunity for me and I can't fuck it up. :\
Thanks so much!
*I'm currently on a PC with Office installed but can get a Mac and just about anything else I need, apparently.
Engagement Rings Dec 17, 05, 3:11 p.m.
Some months ago there was a discussion about some dude who was looking for interesting rings. In reply, some other dude posted a link to an interesting store based out of LA, I think. These people sold really modern styles, including tension bands. The find feature is as helpful as always (that is to say, not at all) so if anybody can help a brother out I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!

Zoom in all the way. Damn thing *is* made of cheese!
Photography sites Jul 8, 05, 12:55 a.m.
I've got a few picked out so far, but I'm looking for some classy and unique photoprahy sites. Simple navigation and focus on the work are priorities.
I recall a member here made a very simple and elegant site but I can't recall their name. Simply put, you moved the cursor to the left of the page to change the cursor to a minus symbol (to move back) and to the right would change it to a plus symbol (to move forward). Vague? Yes, but I would like to take another look.
Thanks.
Starbucks Density Jan 24, 05, 7:57 p.m.
http://www.starbucks.com/retail/…
Came upon this on kottke.org (http://www.kottke.org/05/01/max... and thought I'd give it a go. There are a modest 43 locations within 5 miles of me. That shouldn't be hard to beat.
Finding work Dec 21, 04, 1:06 p.m.
So I'm out of school for now and pretty hard up for cash. I've gotten off to a promising yet disapointing start by having a number of clients and jobs fall through in the last two weeks, turning a lucrative month into a barren one. I'm not 100% desperate yet, but basically I'll need a job in the next couple of weeks or you'll see my body parts on eBay. And then I'll be back in retail.
The question I put to fellow NTers is this: what is the best way to go about getting a job? Full time, part time, contract, it doesn't really matter, just so long as I can pay rent next month.
A little more reading for those interested. I'm in Vancouver and prefer web-based work. Front and/or back end. I have a very student work-filled site up, but it was quite rushed. From brainstorming on paper to web ready in two days. There hasn't been much time to refine it either. I want to redo it and feel that I should before applying because there are areas of improvement and I get the impression people get dazzled whenever they see half-decent Flash. :\ What's more is I don't think I have the luxury of doing the site I want and instead doing a site potential employers might prefer. There's just that time thing.
I've contacted the instructors who have made it known that they like me and my work, but it's the same story across the board. I'm definately on the will-call list, but there's nothing right now.
Anyway, lots of words, but, again, the question is where should I be going from here?
*Follow up question: does anybody here want to give me a shot? Seriously.*
Thanks for reading. If anybody IS interested in giving me a bit of work shoot me an email, I would be grateful.
