About to quit Aug 11, 11, 4:47 p.m.
About to quit my job, not feeling challenged has led me to be a bit of an arrogant dick, and the power that be (sic) has had enough and I reckon is gonna do a large agency style 'disappearing act' on me.
Essentially I'm jumping before I'm pushed.
Am I about to merely shoot myself on the foot, or decapitate from the knee down? Or will I be absolutely fine, being a passionate (ugh, forgive me) front-end developer with experience with HTML5 - among other weird nuggets of interactive real-time graphics know how - who enjoys doing mental gymnastics, but has a problem with the getting-in-on-time thing?
What's it like out there these days?
Cheap lightweight spaceframe material? Jun 2, 10, 5:09 p.m.
I've gotta make a 7'x7' wall of tesellated tetrahedrons for an installation. Each face of the structure will be covered in a rear-projection material so each edge of the structure needs to be as thin as possible but be rigid enough to keep it's shape and not flex, (it won't be subjected to high winds, it's to be displayed indoors). This supporting structure needs to be fairly rigid, but can be supported by support lines from above to take SOME of the stress.
Seems straightforward enough, eh? However we're on a shoestring budget (ie. nothing, and some charity), so the usual nice architectural stuff is pretty much out of the window. I'm racking my brains trying to thing of stuff and the only thing that's come to mind is K'NEX with some Araldite on the clip/rod joins. Though I'm doubtful even of this, as structural integrity took a bit of a backseat (as did projector position) in favour of aesthetics during the inital design phase, and we've already crossed the rubicon on that matter so I just need to make this work.

So with only a week or so to go, and naff all cash, I ask you this QBN: Please for the love of procrastination, preeeez halp!
Swap knowledge for holiday? Jan 20, 10, 10:12 a.m.
I need a holiday, but I usually have good freelance work that appears around the same dates I'm planning on going; plus, I'm shit at saving up, so there!
Any continental yuro-peen QBN'ers willing to provide a free place to stay (that isn't shit) in exchange for me teaching you HTML/CSS, JS(+trendy libraries) or Flex/AS3, Processing, VVVV.org, or any of the other random computery shit I know?
Quontent Management System Dec 1, 09, 9:50 a.m.
Totally (ya liek totully) bored of all these "OMG WHAT CMS SHUD I UUUZEE?!?11 threads, only to have the same OPs post back a day later asking on tutorials on using whatever they decided to roll with.
I propose a few QBN code geeks get together and write a nice modular lightweight CMS.
I'm thinking database support (MySQL, Postgre, etc), simple page management & templating system, and a nice REST interface (output formats including XML, JSON, Serialized JS) to top it off so it can be used to supply data to anything that can make a HTTP request.
Any (fault) takers?
mod_rewrite, brainfart! Nov 28, 09, 5:57 p.m.
Ok well not a 100% legit brainfart seeing as I'm on lots of painkillers*, but I'm having a problem with regexp and mod_rewrite.
Funny thing is the regexp in the RewriteCond works but the RewriteRule begs to differ...
it should do:
/api/getMix/byThread/32/format/j...
to:
/api/getMix/byThread/32.json
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} /api/(.*)\.([a-z]+)$
RewriteRule /api/(.*)\.([a-z]+)$ /api/$1/format/$2 [L]

Ladybirds!!! Oct 15, 09, 6:20 p.m.
Got fucking loads of em crawling around my windows. I know they just want to come inside and jam for the winter, but they're really fucking distracting, especially when I do anything to raise the temperature of the room and they all go nuts thinking it's time to come out of hibernation.
Anyone know of any general household shit that will leave some sort of residue around the window panes to keep em out (or worst case scenario, kill them)?
[jQuery] Iterating and adding events Sep 9, 09, 7:45 a.m.
I wouldn't normally ask how to complete such a elementary task but I've had my fill of drama today already and am thus unable to think laterally at all.
I need to iterate through every element with the "thumb" class applied and add a Click event listener to each of them which will set a bunch of rules/animation etc. dependending on it's index in the returned set of DOM elements.
Code:

I want to like Processing, but... Jun 26, 09, 8:38 a.m.
it feels so cackhanded. I've done at least 3 hours every day this week, even setup an Eclipse view for it, development doesn't feel any nicer. Why do people hype it so much?
On a more constructive tip, does anyone have any alternatives for generative visuals? I've been using VVVV (www.vvvv.org) for a while, and so far it's wonderful. Just wondering if theres any other cool, related shit, worth learning.

Mr. J Clarke Jun 1, 09, 10:17 p.m.
Who are you on QBN man? Honestly dude this isn't fair. You know who I am but I don't know who you are, own up dude, cereally!
I once thought 'Lloyd' was our Lloyd seeing as he suddenly disliked NT when it became QBN. It obviously isn't unless his question about Illinois today was a clever ruse to divert suspicion.
Shit I just don't know!

Anyone know of any coffee houses in central London that (, even if they're shit,) have: wifi, mains sockets, and are of course open round the clock?
[AS3] Integer confusion Feb 12, 09, 9:05 a.m.
Got some PHP generated XML and all is dandy except that I want to display the project "id" values in the reverse order. Not hard? Well it's been bothering me for like 6 hours now.
The obvious solution (the one I used) would be to take the number of XML nodes [ revId = folioFeed.project.length(); ] and the subtract 1 for every iteration of the ItemRenderer.
For some reason the number counts down from zero (it counts normally except the numbers are negative) whenever it's accessed from within the ItemRenderer's FlexEvent.REPEAT listener.
Something is obviously very wrong here (probably my understanding of ItemRenderers). Could anyone shed some light?
Alternatives to Aptana Jan 31, 09, 5:13 a.m.
Could anyone be so kind as to point me in the direction of some decent web development plugins for FlexBuilder3/Eclipse? I normally use PDT & JSEclipse at work as they're not too bloated. I was thinking of installing these on my new laptop this morning, instead I thought I'd give Aptana plug-in a go and found that it's still, packed with bloated tarted up features that just get in the way.
Before I go back to the tried and tested PDT could anyone link me to some development gems?

The old man's freaking out Jan 19, 09, 1:02 p.m.
Got a major source of stress right now. My father works for a rather large software firm, heading up a team on newer stuff and maintiaining legacy code for a bunch of large scale hotel systems used by some very very large international hotel chains as the shit goes deeper into the fan people are starting to get made redundant. He was the workhorse dude when his past place got dumped and alot of his higher-ups got booted last time and we're both kinda scared that I'll be the only one bringing in the dough, and I've had a rough time work wise recently (just the rent of £1800 a month I couldn't manage on a reliable basis at the moment)... if he gets dumped that is.
One of the junior members of his team bit the dust today, and he's shitting himself because he's nearing retirement age because he see's himself as expendable. He's never really worked much with the web apart from writing an ASP.Net client and backend for one of the product line.
He's done shit from teaching english in the Sudan to writing raytracing software and assembly languages but has no qualifications past his A-Levels. (Yeah I'm proud as fuck of him, so what?)
Might it be time to give him a weekend crash course in colour theory, Flex and Actionscript? and would any firms full of young hipsters likely to take on a 50something year old ex-hippie now semi-neoconservative?
Maybe some of the CDs and IDs could give some sort of idea?
