Idea:

Is it possible/difficult to make a Chrome extension that would allow users to mark QBN threads as "Not Design Related" and then they would be instantly hidden from anyone who was using the plugin? It gets permanently hidden once three people mark the thread, which would help prevent people from sabotaging the project. Although, I'd be happy to risk losing a few good threads if it eliminated all the bullshit on here.

We could be our own moderators. The rest of us could stop being distracted by the useless threads.

Unfortunately I have no idea how to do this. Maybe I'll just look for somewhere else to hang. Easier.

I have this weird thing happening on the homepage for my site.

If I scroll up with my mouse (I shouldn't be able to scroll up, it's the top of the page) the page sort of disconnects from the browser and I see this grey background. I can move the site left, right, up or down with my scroll ball. But, it's not actually scrolling, it's moving the page.

It's hard to explain. Imagine it's like the whole page is a layer in photoshop that I'm moving with the move tool, and the grey area is like the transparency behind.

There's no grey background set on my site. It's just white. It's super simple code. Just a two-column responsive layout. A bit of text and some images inside. No floats. Nothing remotely fancy. At first I thought it had something to do with Positioning in CSS. But, all the other pages on the site are using the same structure and css file and they don't have this problem.

Anyone ever run into this? Know how to solve it? I tried Googling around, but I'm having a tough time describing it, as you can plainly see.

I'm trying to get make a page that has a simple password protection. My original plan was to use cpanel, but then I need a login/password combination for the directory.

This isn't a secure password, it will be given to a hundred people or so. We just don't want to give the public access. So really, what I want is just a single form field, and when you type in the correct keyword, you get access to the page.

This seems really simple, but I've been googling around for it, and unfortunately every article I find has to do with proper passwords, strength, security, verification, etc.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'm looking for the most simple way to embed an MP3 into a webpage so it will play automatically in all browsers, without the use of flash.

I've tried googling around but everything I've found is how to do it with flash or with some sort of player. I don't want a player, I just want it to play without any controls or anything like that.

It's not for anything public, it's just a joke page for a friend.

I'm going to the MIDEM conference in Cannes this weekend and since I've never been to Europe I figure the least I can do is make my way to Paris for a week.

I've done a bit of research, but I figure some of you Europeans will have a better idea of the best of Paris.

Any suggestions for things to do? Must see stuff? Galleries, museums, architecture, history, restaurants... if you could only do one thing, what would it be?

Cutting Mat Mouse Pad. Dec 9, 11, 2:36 p.m.

Today I went to buy a cutting mat to use as a mouse pad. I've got a swanky glass desk and my magic mouse doesn't work with out a pad.

Every mousepad I've used slides around, and I don't want to tape it down. Soooo I figured a cutting mat would do the trick, look cool and work for cutting. I think someone here suggested it to me. I found a nice Alvin self-healing mat at my local art supply store.

Cool story, right, bro?

But, the cutting mat had a sticker on the package that said "Warning: this item contains materials that are known by the State of California to cause cancer, reproductive disorders and reproductive complications. Please wash hands after each use."

I thought I'd share, since I know some of you are using cutting mats as mouse pads.

I'm thinking of getting into industrial design as a hobby, on the "enthusiast" level. Looking for suggestions on textbooks to read. Most blogs seem pretty focused on trends. I want to know the history, and specific materials instruction. I want the hard facts, people.

New HD on MBP? Nov 3, 11, 2:40 p.m.

I just picked up a new hard drive for my Macbook Pro, it's a bit old and I need more space. I downloaded the instructions from iFixit, but what I'm unsure about is the best way to get my data across. I don't want to buy an enclosure just for the swap.

Is it best to Clone the existing drive onto an external, then swap the drives and clone again onto the new drive?

Or should I be using Time Machine?

Or is there another way?

I don't mind moving files, but I really don't want to have to install all my apps again. I just want it to be as it is now, but on the new bigger drive.

I'm NOT INTERESTED in anything that isn't Hallowe'en themed. Most of the lists online titled "halloween" seem to be just general horror movies.

Prefer well-shot films, and ones that are actually scary. Not just gory, and not campy.

After much googling, and searching through old threads on QBN, I'm still not finding a jquery image gallery (slider) that meets my needs.

I want something minimalist, or customizable so I can make it look good.

But here's the criteria that I need:

• must be able to exist multiple times on a page.
• must change the address bar to a permanent link so people can link back to a specific image
• must be able to show captions, with links

Tall order, I know. Anyone see anything that can do this? I don't want to write my own, it's just for a little personal photo diary.

I'd like to find something that is the best for photography, as I like to shoot while I travel. Most scenic, or most interesting.

Also, cheap accommodations and easy travel would be nice. Not really looking for adventure.

It's been about 18 hours... no text message from Facebook. Anyone else have this problem? There seems to be tons of people posting on Facebook about it, but no solutions. Thought the QBN elites might have some insight.

They also have a credit card verification system... but if they can't get their SMS feature working properly, I'm not sure I want to be uploading my credit card number.

Glass Desk + Mouse + Pads? Sep 3, 11, 2:51 p.m.

Anyone else using a glass-top desk? I love mine, but I can never find a mouse pad that works. I use a mouse half the time, and a tablet the rest of the time. Sometimes I'll use my mouse with the left hand and stylus in the right, with the keyboard in the middle.

Anyway, I can't find a mouse pad that works. They all end up sliding around after a few hours. I don't want to tape it to the desk.

What do you use? I need something heavy, or maybe a little piece of rubber?

Hey friends,

A friend asked me to move his wordpress site from the directory that he created, into the root directory of his site.

i followed the directions on:

...but I got an error message when I got to step 6 (after changing the URL settings in the WP Admin.) Now, looking at the database I can see that the domains are set correctly, but I've copied everything to the root directory (using Transmit) and I seem to be missing a lot of the files.

When I go to the site I get these error messages.

I've been using the Apple Wireless for the past couple years, but lately I feel like it's awkward.

I feel like one of these split ones would make more sense. BUT I don't want to get used to that, and then have trouble on every other keyboard.

Anyone use one of these? Any other suggestions? What's your keyboard of choice?
