Burn a Million Quid - K Foundation

Would you burn a Million Quid (Dollars, Pesos, Euros, anything) for arts sake?

http://boingboing.net/images/klf-002.jpg

From wikipedia:
"K Foundation Burn a Million Quid was an action that took place on 23 August 1994, in which the K Foundation (an art duo consisting of Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty) burnt one million pounds sterling in cash on the Scottish island of Jura. This money represented the bulk of the K Foundation's funds, earned by Drummond and Cauty as The KLF, one of the United Kingdom's most successful pop groups of the early 1990s. The duo have never fully explained their motivations for the burning.

The incineration was recorded on a Hi-8 video camera by K Foundation collaborator Gimpo. In August 1995, the film—Watch the K Foundation Burn a Million Quid[1]—was toured around the UK, with Drummond and Cauty engaging each audience in debate about the burning and its meaning. In November 1995, the duo pledged to dissolve the K Foundation and to refrain from public discussion of the burning for a period of 23 years.

A book—K Foundation Burn A Million Quid, edited and compiled by collaborator Chris Brook—was published by ellipsis Books in 1997, compiling stills from the film, accounts of events and viewer reactions. The book also contains an image of a single house brick that was manufactured from the fire's ashes."

Steve Jobs Demolishes Historic Home

What a jackamo. In 70 years, lets just torch all of his crappy ipod and ibook creations and destroy them. They were of no use to society anyway, they should not be preserved to show future society how things were way back when...

Which lens would you get? They are almost the same price. One is an coveted "L" lens, and the other has a greater distance...

Toy fanatic builds a house from LEGO

"I guess you could build a house with practically any material. But I never thought you could actually build one from LEGO pieces. So James May, a toy fanatic from the UK surprised me, by building a real house from one of my favorite toys as a child.

The two-story Lego palace is located in the middle of a vineyard and has a working bathroom. James used bricks pieced together by 272 Legos. Over three million bricks were used so that’s about 816 million Lego pieces. Quite an amazing job.

Seen at Geeksugar. More images after the break."

The design failure of suburbia

Suburbia: The place where dreams are made, you have some land, a big house, 3 big SUV's, a big dog, and you shop until you drop. Sounds like a pleasant life experience, no?

There has been many articles and thoughts from many resources that suburbia which was designed by oil rich, and car manufacturing companies are now becoming America's (the worlds) slums. Those white picket fences are going to start decaying, and turning brown. The fact is there are just not sustainable.

Gas prices are rising, driving people to stop using their cars, house prices are down (not in New York and many other metropolitan areas). We are in a war to continue to have control over cheap oil, and there is no solution for alternative energy. Wind, Solar, and Hydrogen are not capable of sustaining us. (Hydorogen has to be created using either natural gas or oil)

Is this the end of suburbia as we know it?

As designers we all face challenges to improve communication, user experiences, and making our lives easier. We are constantly looking at how to design a better, more cohesive, all encompassing product. Some how improving the interactions and well-being of human kind.

As designers how are we to save our suburban counterparts from a perilous future? Is there an answer?

Disclaimer: This sounds like a crock of shit, but after learning and reading, I am sort of nervous to see this economic downfall continue.

Swedish font

I am looking for a Swedish/Norwegian font, that has a wide weight range. (Thin - Bold). The client is from Sweden, and I would like something that represents her home, and has connotations in the fashion world.

I would use Helvetica nueve, but I believe it now has a bad connotation in the fashion world from being overused.

What do you think would be a good fit?

Audio Recording on 7D

I am looking at recording really nice high quality sound on a 7D. I found this option to record straight through an XLR cable to SD cards, but I don't want to use PluralEyes http://www.singularsoftware.com/… to mix the sound later.

http://www.amazon.com/Zoom-Handy…

What is a good product that will sync my audio immediately in the cam, but still get the XLR quality sound into the cam?

Would any of these work?

Deal with dude who has old number?

I switched phone numbers after many years of being in my current city. Now the guy who has my old number is such a jack-ass. He yells at people and gets super annoyed that he has my old number when people call for me.

Obviously I have emailed everyone in my book about my new number, but some people have just not updated it properly...

What should I do? Should I call this dude and tell him to chill out? Just let time pass? Tell him I will break his legs if he curses another one of my contacts again?

iPhone App Spam

Have any of you had this happen?

Recently one of my iPhone applications spammed my whole gmail account. I wanted to hear a perspective from iPhone users on this new trend and to learn ways to protect myself and others from this happening again.

The only application I can blame at this point in my investigative process is www.fring.com, a free voip and messaging company. This is the only application I shared my gmail contact list with not knowing that it would be spammed. The other applications I downloaded in a 24 hour period were: icall, textPlus, & truphone. However I did not share my gmail contact list with these applications.

The online company Aviary had a problem with an iPhone application spamming his account. However this was another application called iDrive (which I don't own). You can read about his similar trials and tribulations here:

http://aviary.com/bizblog/posts/…

I called Apple to report this spamming activity, and they basically said there is nothing they can do. I sign agreements with the third-party apps and they have no control over those agreements. The thing is that they do have control. If they can take an app off being x-rated, they can take off a spamming application.

Does anyone have a list of applications that are spamming the iPhone community like this? There needs to first be a sham and blame campaign followed by legal action on this illegal practice.

Share HD on 2 Comps?

Mac & PC sharing HD via USB

I have an interesting harddrive sharing question. Currently I have 3-4 macs all networked together, they all share multiple HD's and connect great to eachother. Now I have one PC connected to this network as well. No problem.

I have a client who has given me VPN access to external networks on a second PC. Now what I am trying to do is connect this "external" computer into the "network". It is virtually impossible for me to connect this machine to the network by using network settings. I don't have the administrator rights.

My workaround idea is to use a USB switch. However I can't stand the thought of having to click a button each time I want to share a file back and forth from machine to machine.

Other things I have tried:
Box.net - the application stopped working on the PC. The firewall stopped this immediatly.
Time capsule - doesn't work. I need admin right to get the network set up right...

So what I am looking for ideally is an USB switch without the switch. It looks like people claim these exist, do any of you have thoughts on any of these, or have recommendations for others?

brooklyn designer loft share/lease

Hi,

Anyone out there in the New York/Brooklyn area want to share a space, or know of an open shared space that I could share?

I would love to work out of a loft in one of the South Brooklyn neighborhoods of DUMBO, Redhook, Clinton Hill, Gowanus, etc.

Craigslist has some interesting prospects, 600+ sq in Redhook for $950, Gowanus for $500 and Clinton hill for $1500.

Some of these would need to be shares. Any like minded people growing outside of there spaces and need room to take in on-site freelancers or just want more space?
