best buy's price for the 70-300 IS is inflated. here it is for $550:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr…

having said that, the 70-200mm f4L is regarded as having better optics and is the superior lens in terms of sharpness and focus speed, and it is what i would pick. but, it's up to you - the other lens does boast a longer reach and image stabilization.

IS is not all that helpful in practical application, Unless the subject is still.

I know its inflated, but I have a gift card. So I rather not take it out of pocket...

dibec awesome street work, and bigtrick, I love the dancing shots, epigraph nice music stuff.

    Thanks for your input.

What do you guys think about me heading into venues, though. Say I wanted to take my cam to a concert and just shoot. The white lens would call attraction and I know security would ask where is your press pass...

That's one practical aspect I like of the black lens... any thoughts on that topic?

    • oh. yeah. i've had my dslr taken away at concerts before. i think white or black doesn't matter, if they see it at the door... a dslr + zoom will look too pro anywaybigtrickagain1/4
... big zoom will look too pro anyway.bigtrickagain2/4
Rule of thumb: if the lens can be removed it "has to be" pro... keep in mind both of those lens...DoktorDavid3/4

Because I am actually upgrading from this, barf:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr…

slow in terms of f stop or hsm?

    • i'm pretty sure it was more operator's fault then the lens itself...pr21/5
yes, this was an operator error. buying a kit for my first film cam... not so smart.ethanfink2/5
what i meant is that EVERY lens is a bit fuzzy at its extremes, so if you have 2.8 lens step it down...pr23/5
...to say 4 or 5.6 and you get crisp images.pr24/5
      got it.ethanfink5/5

yes, f-stop. i never considered variable f-stop lenses pro because in heat of the moment you forget to adjust the f-stop while changing the focal length and bag, you are fucked.

Oh boy... now I am back to the drawing boards...

My 18-50 is 2.8 and I love it. I am just wondering if I should push for it for the range. But your opinions make me think if I get a f/4 I am throwing my money away. Hmmmm...

No one can decide but yourself. I shoot lots of low light stuff so i end up pushing the camera to it's extremes: lens wide open, high ISO (yes, noise...) slow shutter so the images come out blurry sometimes... Thus anything above 2.8 is useless for me.

My main workhorse if Sigma 24-70/2.8. A Russian Zenitar 50/2, Canon 35/2, Tokina 11-16/2.8 and one telephoto Sigma 50-150/2.8.

Nice PR, I have the 11-24 f/4 version of the Tonkina and the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8.

Maybe the Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 is worth a shot...

    Thanks guys.

    • i have the sigma 18-50 f2.8 also - my most-used zoom.bigtrickagain1/2
      i agree, lovely little lens.ethanfink2/2

i just rented the 2.8L 70-200 lens for my trip to japan.....the lens is unreal....a little heavy, but crisp and fast. you can trim some weight and get the f4 if you have the 5dm2 because the high iso's are so great. you can also get an extension ring and stretch it to 300 easily.

    • also, i've seen people put a black stocking over the white lens to call less attention to it...you can still rack it and access all the IS switches etc too.linearch1/3
and use the IS switches toolinearch2/3
the 70-200 F2.8 IS is truly unreal... 30th saves your butt during weddings and corp eventsvaxorcist3/3

try the 135mm F2, a real gem..... no zoom, but F2 and amazing out of focus backgrounds.... focusses faster too...

    • 85 F1.8 is also a total gem.... stays on my camera most of the time these days....vaxorcist1/4
also, 85 f1.2 is out of this world - eyes in focus but blurry nose from 20ft. outrageous price tho.bigtrickagain2/4
      Only $1840 with rebate!ethanfink3/4
yes.. I tried the 85 1.2 once, AF was slow and odd.... very finicky, some great, some bad....vaxorcist4/4

Vaxorcist I am debating the 100mm f/2.8L Macro (kinda close).

Linearch, the 2.8 is going to be out of my range on the 70-200, what a beauty though. Can only imagine some great shots. Post em when you can.

    • 100mm macro is divine.autoflavour1/2

try the 85 1.8.... really fast focus, amazing backgrounds and it's so small nobody notices it.... the 100 2.8 macro seems a bit too big, but very nice...

    • prime lenses change the way you pre-visualize things... the 100 2.8 macro is nice, balances oddly thovaxorcist
