With such recursive inspiration, you'll always be looking at a limited horizon, rather than the infinite possibilities that are waiting for you in the real world.

For me, things like design portals make life a bit too easy. It's design for a fast food generation. Of course, we need to look for inspiration in all sorts of places - and design portals can be a good place to start - but it can also make people very, very lazy. It fast becomes the only place they go for inspiration.

So why bring up my feelings about design portals when I'm writing a book about Flash? Well, I think a generation of designers have grown up with them. Instead of looking at the wider world around them, they've simply emulated or copied what's gone before. Many designers portfolios have become bland and unoriginal. They're all clones of one another, all desperate to be accepted by the design community, and its easier to "get in" if you're wearing the right clothes, so to speak. I'm not saying this is true for all - there's some breathtaking talent out there- but it just worries me that many of the resumes I receive all look the same. We've had conversations at work about why no-one seems to be breaking things any more. Surely that's where the fun is?

But being original takes hard work. And we like things to be easy, We like the commonplace. We like to feel comfortable.

But nothing good ever came out of feeling comfortable. Look at elvis. As soon as he had it all, it was down hill creatively - not to mention for his waistline."

I'm working with a small team on a web project centered around personal "Trust/Credibility/Endorsement" online.....

We are scratching our heads to come up with a nice 'over-arching' name for the project... I thought I'd put it out here for any suggestions / brain farts!

anything is helpfull, ...I like words that have X/Z/K in them but not a requirementm, It could be completely abstract and not nessasarily an offshoot of any of the above.

"As much as I agree with you on the emotional level I must still say that some clients boss around their designers too much. It very much depends on good project management I guess but some clients really do look over your shoulders all the time.

All craftsmen get irritated at this. I guess the electricity guy who sets up the wiring in your house would be irritated as well if he would have people dabble to much in his craftsmanship. And all in all, not much differs craftsmen apart, they (probably most of them) have education and they perform a specialized craft.

The higher up in the food chain of craftsmanship you get, the less you encounter this dabble-problem. As a designer, of course you improve your design skills and your talent at communicating your ideas to clients, but the more original respect you have the less dabble. A junior designer for example have just finished school and probably have poor skills in design and communication with real clients.

The campus map has Hotspot buttons. Each of which needs to link to an external swf file on click, that loads within the original map framework above.

Currently I have this script on each button hotspot;

on (release) {
_root.mc.loadMovie ("downstairs_isb.swf");

..But when I check this on a dial-up (or outside of my work) it takes forever to load the swf's

Am I going the wrong way about this ? ..what happens when you try to click an area on the map? (only some are active)
