help a sad clown Jan 30, 09, 4:46 p.m.
Sad circumstances have caused me to post today. I see a lot of smart and savvy folk in these threads, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I have a black 13" macbook that has been ever so nice to me for the last few years. Audio, video and graphic design et al. My baby.
Yesterday, it started to spin the beach ball. Usually i wait it out, or worst case restart. I switched app after app, and then finally to the finder and they were all spinning the beach ball. It spun colorfully for a full 10 min before I decided to restart. When i did, i got something I haven't seen since my the heyday of my old G3 Tower (albeit, a nice OSXish version): an unchanging gray screen displaying a flashing folder with a question mark.
I took it to the genius bar, they booted off an external and found no trace of the drive at all—a veritable ghost in the machine. -_-
Its messed up as i was considering purchasing a new SeaGate 500g a mere 24 hours earlier, for Time Machine or what have u. So this stings all the more. I had unrecorded lyrics, unreleased songs, and a bunch audio/visual goodness, precious invaluable.. Plus i'd finally tamed C.C.'s Things too. ;)
Have any of you had a similar experience? How did u cope? What did u do?
Someone said get the Disk Warrior app, and Apple says i gotta hit up a data recovery spot.
Can anyone recommend a place that does data recovery (that doesn't cost $1000's)? :0
im cryin on my keyboard. (not really, but kinda... yeah, i am).
Thanks folks.
Humbly yours,
Nathan

Global Facial Recognition Database Oct 20, 08, 5:09 p.m.
A balance between security and privacy? hmm
from:http://www.guardian.co.uk/w...
Interpol is planning to expand its role into the mass screening of passengers moving around the world by creating a face recognition database to catch wanted suspects.
Every year more than 800 million international travellers fail to undergo "the most basic scrutiny" to check whether their identity documents have been stolen, the global policing cooperation body has warned.
Senior figures want a system that lets immigration officials capture digital images of passengers and immediately cross-check them against a database of pictures of terror suspects, international criminals and fugitives.
The UK's first automated face recognition gates - matching passengers to their digital image in the latest generation of passports - began operating at Manchester airport in August.
Mark Branchflower, head of Interpol's fingerprint unit, will this week unveil proposals in London for the creation of biometric identification systems that could be linked to such immigration checks.
The civil liberties group No2ID, which campaigns against identity cards, expressed alarm at the plans.
"This is a move away from seeking specific persons to GCHQ-style bulk interception of information," warned spokesman Michael Parker.
"There's already a fair amount of information collected in terms of passenger records. This is the next step. Law enforcement agencies want the most efficient systems but there has to be a balance between security and privacy." The growth of international criminal gangs and the spread of terrorist threats has increased demand for Interpol's services.
1000s of photos Jun 18, 08, 5:39 p.m.
i was just given a thumb drive chock full of photos... all of em are 1MB and up.
I want to make em like half that size for an iMovie slide-show they want me to make.

Apple Spaces Jun 18, 08, 5:09 p.m.
Does anybody here use it?
» How do you like to set it up?
Does it ever bug out on you?
Personal story:
I finally tried it out recently and started to really dig it (i had one mega space just for the internetz)—but it does random buggy things, like throw browser windows into new "spaces" that don't exist (even tho they're all sposed to open only in the one). Silliness. Maybe i gotta wait for Snow Leopold...
Is there a typographic term for... Jun 18, 08, 1:53 a.m.
those nicely illustrated single letters that start the first paragraph of a new chapter in neat old books? Where like a dragon or something wraps around the letter "A." I'd love to find a collection of em. Kinda like in o.g. versions of Aesop's Fables I imagine... gyeahh
