Book Wraps/Mailing Package Design Jan 1, 12, 4:11 p.m.
I have to design a book wrap, mailing box, and label, and I'm all out of ideas. The book design isn't much to look at, the budget is low, and timeframe short.
Does anyone have any links to book design and packaging I can use for inspiration?
Ta muchly.
Online Brand Guidelines Apr 12, 11, 8:08 a.m.
Anyone have any other examples of brand guidelines translated for the web? I'm not talking about PDFs of printed standards here, but actual (nicely designed) websites.
This example is probably at the top end of what I'm looking for (but maybe too gimmicky):

While this is probably not comprehensive enough:

Polymorphic Identity Systems Oct 4, 10, 11:10 a.m.
Looking for more examples of identity systems that change configuration depending on their use/other parameters.
One example is the recent Nordkyn identity:

Oi, photgraphers... Dec 15, 09, 12:28 p.m.
This example shot was taken by a professional but we have a temp who needs shot and we need to do it ourselves. We have a Nikon D80 and a light kit at our disposal, but don't have any other info from the initial shoot. Is there a method of replicating this effect using Photoshop from a standard-lit photograph? I know this isn't a lot of info to go on, and pardon my ignorance when it comes to photography... I just thought I'd ask.
iPhone App Designers Dec 6, 09, 12:15 p.m.
Ok, so I've made my base template, downloaded and utilized the teehan+lax iPhone GUI 3.0 PSD, and I'm not a retard so I know which direction I'm headed. But... I'm looking for a general set of rules/guidelines/procedures that explain things like iPhone system fonts installed, minimum point sizes, and basically anything else pertinent to the design for the iPhone. Does that exist, and if so, where?
I already Googled, before anyone asks ;)

I have to admit, when I saw the name I thought Susan Boyle was about to whore herself out. But this is great news!
Rock Band Aug 29, 09, 9:06 p.m.
Been addicted for weeks now. But Sept 3rd - the fucking Jam and Talking Heads! I'll never leave the house.
Visualizing Music Aug 24, 09, 6:56 p.m.
Was re-introduced to the Music Animation Machine today by the opening video at the Edward Tufte course here in Indy.
It's the first time I've seen these in ages. I could watch these all day:

Quick Q... Karate Kid, kind of. Aug 15, 09, 7:45 p.m.
I'm having a brain fart. What do you call those competition charts that go from groups to finalists, like in the world Cup and, erm, the Karate Kid? Kind of like a scoreboard.
The thing in the background here:
Vids of gigs you've been to. Aug 15, 09, 9:26 p.m.
Been reliving the past on YouTube. Post vids of the best you've been to!
I'm sure I have a ton more, I'm still remembering and searching.
Go for it!
Know this font? Aug 13, 09, 6:11 p.m.
A challenge...
I know for a fact I linked to an image of this font in either a Font of the Day or Fonts You Want thread on here last year or the year before, but I'm fucked if I can find it now.
Each character is made up of a single line that loops over itself to form the basic character shapes. It would lend itself well to neon signs but doesn't look like neon - it's super simplified and looks very fresh. Think VAG Rounded made up of one line with sections missing.
Anyone want to take a guess?

Time & Money Jul 26, 09, 8:13 p.m.
I've worked out that the only solution to my current fiscal misery is to start freelancing outside work hours. Unfortunately, at the moment I work anywhere from 50-60 hours per week (of course, for no more than my salary) which makes it not impossible, but very difficult to be motivated to spend another 20hrs a week freelancing.
My goal in life now is happiness. I don't want to be a workaholic. The 60hr work week is growing increasingly tedious. It's been like this since February and shows no sign of letting up. Plus I have a wife and 2 dogs who I'd like to see more of, and not have to bitch about how much work I have to do. Also, I've no real interest in getting rich. It would be nice, but I don't really think it's necessary to be happy. Being able to pay all your bills and not live of the last $5 of each of 6 credit cards would be wonderful.
So my question(s) for y'all is:
1. Does anyone here work 50-60hrs a week for a salary and then spend another 10-20 freelancing? Are you married/single and does it cause any grief with your significant other?
2. Has anyone quit a good design job to work a standard, no-stress, 9-5 job in order to freelance after hours? Or part-time and ruthlessly pursued freelance at other times?
3. Any other tips/advice on maintaining a healthy work/life/money balance? To reiterate: I don't want to be rich, just comfortable. I don't want to work 60hrs a week, but don't want to do 20 either.
Merci beaucoup. I realize my timing is lousy as usual (Sunday night) so I'll bump in the morning.
Big Type Suggestions Jul 20, 09, 9:29 a.m.
Since you all seem to like suggesting sexy sans types in these suggestion threads, I've got a question for you: What are your favorite heavy sans for large type? Possibly looking for condensed, but really need a range of widths and weights, maybe even with a complementary slab or serif.
We're about to embark on a huge brand refresh for a company whose current primary typeface is Helvetica Neue Condensed. I feel it's too cold, to neutral for them and need something that maybe has a bit more personality (but not too much).
Was thinking along the lines of things like Knockout, Flama, etc., so if y'all have any suggestions let me know. Thanks.
