Spike Lee - New Orleans

Anyone see the first part of the Spike Lee Epic documentary "when the levee broke" that was about hurricaine Katrina hitting New Orleans.

jesus, some amazing footage and photography - VERY hard hitting stuff.

especially against bush. what an ignorant c*nt he is.
he said that he never knew there was a possible disaster about to happen, yet they showed him a few days before having a video conference phone call with an expert on teh matter and the expert was telling him to DO something about it!!! madness!!

white male terrorist uk

yesterday morning just before 9am i was walking into Waverley Station, Edinburgh to fire up to Dundee for a meeting when I was stopped by a Policeman (from Special Terrorist Unit - kitted out to the max!) and informed that he was stopping me under section 44(2) of the Anti-Terrorism act 2000 and that I was to be searched.

He filled out a pink slip with my name, d/o/b, address and took down details of what i was wearing, asked me where i was going and what i was doing before looking in the rucksack i had.

The reason for this?
Its the police exercising their new right to be able to stop and search ANYONE for ANY reason in an attempt to maybe stumble across some terrorists someday somewhere.
F*CKING BOLLOCKS if you ask me!

The time i was stood there and the rest of the time in the station I saw the police stop and search a few other people. Three of them were white males about the same age as me and quite obviously UK citizens and one white female probably about the same age too.
Now ..... statistics show over the past, what - 20 years, that terrorist activity is NOT carried out in the UK by professional average white male citizens.

Im not meaning that in ANY racist way - it's just FACT!!
So what the f*ck are they doing wasting their time stopping me?!

It's to keep the police force being seen as a "Politically Correct" body. If they were just to stop people of ethnic minorities or immigrants (the people statistically more likely to commit a terrorist act!) then the police would be persecuted for not being PC and being racist.
Which in reality is a load of bollocks, again, its just FACT!!
In order to remain "PC" the police have to waste their own time and taxpayers money as well as the people they stop's time.

This is scary! stuff like this comes in in drips and drabs. occasionally you'll see the police dotted about stopping people like this then next thing you know it's the norm.

Oh yeah, and i forgot to add, when I arrived back in Edinburgh there was no police in the station randomly checking people.
I can assume from that that the police must have some kind of intelligence suggesting that terrorists dont attack after 9.30 am maybe?

Crock of shite!!!
Waste of TIME and RESOURCES!!!
Waste of taxpayers money!!!

Oi! Banksy ....

Was in london this weekend, saw a classic bit of graffiti over some of Banksys work. It was as you come off the tube at Chalk Farm and head down towards the market and Old Lock Tavern.
I sooo wish i'd taken a photo of it cos it sums up the way i feel about Banksy these days too seeing as he seems to have sold out and become as much of a media whore as Paris.

It was a stencil on a wall of a policewoman (it maybe had the face of an old lady).
someone had sprayed beside it

"Oi Banksy, up yours!"

i wish i'd done it :P

Street Photography Camera

All QBN photographers & esp Hombre_Lobo the "qbn camera answers man"

I'm looking for a replacement camera to my Ricoh GX100 and would appreciate any feedback about my shortlist, esp if you have these cameras or have testied/tried them.

I got the GX100 a few years ago after selling all my Lomo LC-A+(Plus Wide Angle Lens), Holga and other retro cameras. These cameras made me fall in love with photography all over again as it was fun and experimental again rather than being clinical and digital.
I chose the GX100 over the GRD because it had the zoom lens. Something that's handy for getting closer to things up high. I love VERY wide angle street photography so I use the GX a lot with the lens hood adaptor, 43-46mm step up ring and a Nikon WC-E68 lens. This means that im carting about a tiny camera but with a big hefty lens on the front most of the time.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR IN A CAMERA:
- Small size (Both camera and lens - the smaller the bulk, the more likely i'm likely to take my camera out with me)
- Fun (Not too much faffing around too)
- Image quality (Both high and low iso's)
- Possibility of v.wide or fisheye lenses (would be on most of the time)
- quite discreet for shooting on the sly
- zoom/telephoto lens(es)

THE SHORTLIST

Fujifilm X10

http://www.photographyblog.com/images/sized/images/uploads/fujifilm_x10-550x399.jpg

Not the smallest of cameras but thinner than others with lenses when camera is off. I've seen people with filters screwed into the front so I wonder if I could get step ups from 40.5-46mm and use my Nikon lens for this when I want to take very wide stuff.
Not a huge sensor but it gives great results from what ive seen on flickr and review tests.
Seen it described as a P+S camera that pro's have been wishing for years to happen.
To turn on you twist the lens which cuts out having to click a button to turn on then think about taking the photo.

Pentax Q

http://www.ubergizmo.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/pentax-q.jpg

With this camera I think people "get it" or they just "dont get it" and will probably slate it. I love how fun this camera seems whilst still knocking out decent quality pics even at high iso's! Size is tiny - although with some of the lenses on it, it becomes a chunkier thicker thing.
Lots of filters/effects/settings you can set to quick dial on front. Decent selection of lenses for high quality or fun shooting.
Kinda pricey for the spec on paper.

This guy does a great review and think he feels the same about this camera as I do. We "get it"

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 + 14-42mm X Lens

http://www.highsnobiety.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/panasonic-lumix-dmc-gx1-0.jpg

Kinda chunky body but coupled with the X lens doesnt give such a huge bulk. VERY high quality 16mp! Could buy a fisheye/wide lens to carry around when shooting.

Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GF3 + 14-42mm X Lens

http://www.digphoto.org/images/content/camera-panasonic-gf3x-kit.jpg

A lot smaller than the GX1, only 12MP though. With the X series lens it isnt a bulk.

MySpace Chick

was walking to lunch today in a bit of a daze, troddling along the road and i see this lass walking towards me smiling, as she gets closer she looks like shes waiting for me to acknowledge her. then i realised who it was - its a lass that is one of my friends on myspace that i sometimes talk to on msn too.
what a shock! never met her before. stood and talked for a few mins before she had to run off as she was running late for uni.
I've always thought she was stunning from her pics on myspace but I was well blown away by the fact that she is actually BETTER looking in the flesh. i'd even say probably one of the best looking girls i think ive ever seen in my puff!

why lord did you have to make her a lesbian?

:(

i feel like going for an operation to make me a lady now so i can ask her out. lol

The Stone Roses

http://homepage.mac.com/john_kruper/artwork/stone_roses/stone_roses.jpg

This album is 20 years old this month!

There is rumours of a reform later this year - although they are being denied by Ian Brown's management - saying he's too busy doing his own new album and John Squire is too busy putting together his next exhibition.

Flooded England

So once again weather conditions prove dangerous for the english.

The "oh soooo strong" winds that the new year brought (90+ mph winds that were as if it were "the end of the world" in england but just a normal winters day in scotland) managed to de-roof some homes and even knocked over a wall that killed someone and made headline news.

Now they have had lots of rainfall and a number of rivers have burst their banks and have flooded towns leaving thousands without electricity and fresh water.

To me, that says more about English builders and planners than it does about 'global warming'.

(a) Build your buildings and roofs to withstand the elements.

and

(b) don't build on flood plains

Two simple rules would have saved a lot of trouble!!

"NEW" music rant!

At the weekend there was a program on about the life and music of Jimi Hendrix. It was a really amazing program with some great interviews with guitarplaying peers of his time.
The first cd i ever bought was a Jimi Hendrix one.
He's one of these artists ive always loved but you kind of forget about how astounding his music actually was and this program reminded me of that.

Pete Townsend was on the program saying that when Jimi appeared on british shores Eric Clapton phoned up pete (who hed never talked to before) and asked him to the cinema! lol. during the film they talked about Jimi's skills - they both were in awe of his skills and at the same time felt threatened by his skills.

Watching Jimi play on that program was amazing and beautiful. Someone absolutely at one with the instrument they were playing. It's like it was part of him. It got me thinking that ive NEVER EVER seen something quite like it. Yeah sure there are some great guitar players, but nothing quite like that.

The music he was making was groundbreaking in the sense that he was taking something old (blues riffs) and creating something new and something that was very expressive.

It got me thinking about "new music", like groundbreaking stuff, something that is TRULY new.
The first time you see/hear jimi hendrix, its something completely new - like the first time you hear James Brown, Motown, The Beatles, Rap Music (not the usual trash but something that was NEW in its time - Sugarhill Gang/Grandmaster Flash or original gangster rap like NWA or political rap like Public Enemy), Thrash music like Suicidal Tendencies or intricate guitar work from the likes of Heavy Metal bands like MegaDeath, Acid House or original Rave music, Drum and Bass from Goldie. The first time you hear DJ Shadows album "endtroducing" - then find out that he hadnt played a single note on that album - its all sampled from other artists music but like each of his songs is put together from samples from numerous other artists songs - and its music you'll have never have heard of before - really rare stuff. New Order, The Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses all have the quality of something that was like BAAAAAAM! - F*CKING TAKE THAT!
in fact, yeah - even Take That or NKOTB. They were the first major boybands - a phenomenan in themselves. Prefect pop like Madonnas early stuff - Borderline and Like a Virgin and Cathy Dennis. Amazing stuff! Now youve got the likes of Kylie and Britney - some amazing pop, but its not theirs - its written for them.

Where am i going with this you might ask? lol.
well it was the depressing thought that in the last say 15 years there has been NO REAL musical breakthroughs, no new styles.
Everything has been done before it seems, lots of indie bands, dance music has got sh*te beyond belief - people looping phil collins songs and it makes number f*cking one!
bands like Kasabian are just doing what jesus jones/emf/neds atomic dustbin/newFADS/carter USM did in the early 90s with indie , music and sampling technologies. All the Dirty Pretty things / Libertines etc has been done before. The most annoying band of recent years has been the chili peppers - f*** - ive been a fan of the chilipeppers since i was at high school when their "mothers milk" album was out. Each of their albums has been completely different from the previous, mothers milk was very punky, the ones before that took a heavy influence from George Clintons P-Funk, blood sugar sex magic was a great album - but grrr, their recent few albums have all been the same! theyve fallen into some formula that they know sells albums to the kids and sells out gigs. They are still amazing, but , hrm its a bit dissapointing :(
The Jamie T album seemed decent when it came out - obvious sounds of The Clash in there though and it was an album that I tired of quite quickly.
Dont get me wrong, i do like a lot of these bands ive mentioned, are they just the best of a bland bunch though.

Recently i've got into the music Aphex Twin, hes someone ive known about for years but never really had the opportunity to listen to his stuff - i dunno why. but yeah ive recently discovered his stuff - its too unique for words, each album is different and its so experimental.
Ive been having a bit of musicians-block with my own music and thats been a great help, hearing something completely new.
Id been getting stuck in a rut with my own tunes, seeming to fall into the same formula and using the same instruments/sounds.
So thank you mister Aphex Twin for that lil kick up the ass.
Another band id recently discovered was The Teardrop Explodes. I was listening to a recording of an interview from radio2 from years ago with Bill Drummond (from the KLF) he was the teardrops manager back in the day. The Teardrops stuff is amazing "indie" stuff but with a bit of early 'pop' injected into it - the synthesised trumpets etc. lovely stuff! "haha im drowning in your love" - what a song!

I cant believe you've read through this rant lol.

Got any suggestions of NEW music for me then?
something thats going to knock me over, something thats going to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end like the moment The Who came out on stage at the SECC and Pete Townsend windmilled his first chord?
Something thats going to blow me away more than seeing sigur ros playing the queens hall (old ballroom) about 6 years ago in edinburgh and me feeling like i was in a dream? or seeing/hearing the madness of the flaming lips playing tracks from "yoshimi ..." at the same venue having never ever heard any of their stuff before?

fire me some links.

Northern Rock Anyone?

Anyone on NT with Northern Rock?

As someone who doesnt have a mortgage i've been watching this story with interest.
Because britains economy is a false one based mostly on peoples dept (£1.73trillion!) and houses are priced way beyond the average persons means, some people are reckoning this could be the start of a turning point for the price of property in the UK.

nice if you dont have a place.
not good if you do have a place.

with new homes going up here there and everywhere that are priced at rediculous prices they have been saying that shares in these companies have plummeted too as the future doesnt look too bright for them.
