Lukus, your idea to let the corruptible bureaucrat muppets in governments decide how stuff should be sold is what scares me. It's not the corporations that brought the current crisis on us as you say, it was mostly government control (ie. political-correctness driven Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae). They keep telling it was the lack thereof because they want more – and this is what they're getting.

Don't worry about monopolies, they always fail, they're unsustainable in the long run. Worry if they get politicians to rig the system for them. Letting governments decide about markets is a perfect door for it.
What is important is to have diversity. There are closed systems and open systems, this is a healthy situation. If you force all systems to be open, you ironically get less options: no closed systems.

Let the corporations fight each other competing. It is always good for the end customer who gets a cheap and developed product. American working class was the first in the world to be able to afford luxury products like cars. All thanks to hard competition.
The beauty of free market is also there is always a place for a David amongst Goliaths. This is more true now than ever. Facebook was founded in 2004 in a dorm room.
The Crunchpad story, failed for organisational reasons, showed how easy it was to produce a touchpad tablet. Almost anyone can make one and they will.

    • Yeah, but it's the fact politicians are corruptible that's the problem. We need to reduce the possibility of lobbying maybe?lukus_W
    • maybe?lukus_W
    • I think part of the reason we're in this mess, is because there was a lack of regulation. Maybe economists would agree.lukus_W
    • But I understand your fears about gov. control. I do think that laws and legislation does have a place in society though.lukus_W
    • *dolukus_W
    • Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely (Lord Acton, some 130 years ago).raf
    • You want to give politicians more power, what a fantastic idea.raf
    • No - I want to make corporations accountable to us.lukus_W
    • The way things are heading .. this is becoming less likely - we rely on them _hopefully_ doing the right thing.lukus_W
    • ... but yeah, politics needs to be cleaned up somehow first.lukus_W
    • By giving them more power? Over what we smoke, eat, drink, what tablets use?raf
    • "Socialism means slavery." - also Acton, in 19th century.raf
    • Socialism doesn't mean slavely -> that's bullshit. The US media tells you that, but it's not true.lukus_W
    • Socialism is just about putting people before profit -> it's a tonic to extreme commercialism / capitalism.lukus_W
    • It coexists with capitalism and moderates it - keeps it focused and balanced.lukus_W
    • Banks could fuck up 'cause they had govt. guarantees. This means they had zero responsibility, no risk at all.raf
    • Every so often we need to ask - is this good for society. < when you ask that, it's socialism in action.lukus_W
    • Parts of the gov. will need to be dismantled .. but that doesn't mean all gov. is bad.lukus_W
    • Socialism is destructive, it takes away freedom for the price of comfort. You have no responsibility for your actions.raf
    • You lose your job, the govt. pays you. You're a single mom - there is no better gig in terms of job security.raf
    • Socialism != nazism, communism or fascism .. the US media is completely out of order for spreading this nonsense.lukus_W
    • The idea that ALL people take advantage of benefits and milk the system is wrong ..lukus_W
    • It's not a reason to stop caring as a society.lukus_W
    • "people initiative" and philanthropy are natural parts of healthy free market capitalism, don't make it socialism :)raf
    • The alternative is to let people starve, die and rot when they're faced with adversity.lukus_W
    • SOCIALISM IS ABOUT PUTTING PEOPLE BEFORE PROFIT. Occasionally that's a good thing ;)lukus_W
    • Socialism and capitalism are compatible.lukus_W
    • "The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money" –who said that? :)raf
    • ... someone with a lot of money, no doubt ;)lukus_W
    • btw, the bank system is rigged for them: you must use their services to run a business.raf
    • We just need to find good ways to implement 'people initiatives' / 'philanthropy' -> sometimes it's logical for the gov. to implement the solutions.lukus_W
    • monetary system is rigged: you cannot print your own currencyraf
    • the solutions.lukus_W
    • I do sympathise with the idea that big government is a bad thing.. but the answer is somewhere in the middle, imo.lukus_W
    • We need regulatory frameworks which are intelligent and fair - in terms of digital stuff, some of these frameworks still need to be invented.lukus_W
    • be invented.lukus_W
    • It seems logical, how come it never works? Have you seen a good EU website? they all cost fortune each...raf
    • Well, yeah the EU is another problem .. it's difficult. I have no idea what's best to be honest.lukus_W
    • I just have a hunch that corporations aren't going to put us first, unless they have to.lukus_W
    • I don't really know where the answer is, I just feel taking risk from people's lives is destructive, kills healthy instinctraf
    • And I agree with that (Maggie Thatcher) quote: EU economy is in agony. Socialism's problem is it is not sustainable.raf

    • Hahaha... I just love socialist/capitalist banter with lukus_W, missed it :)raf

I feel the same way - I _CAN'T STAND_ Apple fanboys!! .. especially the 'dude / bro' vernacular that will inevitably come with their online posts, due to the fact their SOOOO keen to show that they're 'cool' and are not like the nerds who use other platforms.

    Make me want to vomit.

    • .. like some rehashed badly acted character from an 80s frat movie .. (part surfer / part frat / part jersey shore douche)lukus_W
    • </rant> I recently spent some time on arguing with some apple fanboys on another forum.lukus_W
    • One guy called himself a "self-proclaimed apple fanman" .. I mean WTF!!?!lukus_W
  • ukit0

We're all making assumptions about ways that it's good/bad but it's kinda pointless to speculate isn't it? I'm guessing that, like me, none of you have ever used a large tablet device like this. Once you drop your $500-900 on the thing, is it going to end up being this amazing intuitive device that you use everyday like the iPhone, or will it end up being a novelty that we'll all get sick of it in a couple days? For me that's the main question, not whether it has Flash or a camera. I'm kind of tempted to buy one just to see, but I'd rather wait for the 3G enabled version at the end of the month.
